GIRLS HOCKEY
Notre Dame Academy of Hingham head coach John Findley has spent more than half of his life behind the bench as an assistant or head coach in girls and boys hockey.
The widely-respected 63-year-old confirmed Wednesday morning that after eight years as head coach of the Cougars – and 35 years coaching in all – he’s hanging up the whistle as the latest legend to retire.
“I think younger guys, younger girls should have the opportunity to be a head coach,” Findley said. “NDA is a great place to coach. It’s awesome, such a great spot to be in. … It was a lot of fun. I wouldn’t trade it in for eight years of anything. Best eight years of my life, I enjoyed it a ton.”
Findley’s tenure with NDA were the only years he spent as a head coach, but he made the most of them.
While he never won a state title with the Cougars, they reached the state finals in 2018 (Div. 2) and in 2024 (Div. 1) – losing in double overtime to Wellesley and in triple overtime to St. Mary’s of Lynn, respectively. This year’s upset loss to Bishop Stang in the Div. 1 second round marked the first time NDA hadn’t reached at least the Div. 1 or Div. 2 state quarterfinals in Findley’s tenure, and his teams posted a 104-40-16 record (.700) in seasons with a state tournament despite playing a challenging independent schedule.
That success and the chase for titles isn’t what Findley will miss most, though.
“I love the girls, they’re great kids,” he said. “I’m going to miss them.”
Findley started his coaching career as an assistant with BC High, before moving over to South Windsor (Conn.) for a year. He then spent four years as an assistant with the Duxbury boys – winning a state title in 2000 – before spending the next four with the Duxbury girls.
He switched over to serve as twin brother and former Hingham girls head coach Tom Findley’s assistant for the next 16 years, winning state titles in 2008 (Div. 2) and 2011 (Div. 1). Coaching with him, before taking the head coaching vacancy at NDA in 2017, was an experience he will forever cherish.
“It was the best,” he said. “Coaching with him was great, it was awesome.”
