Tiger Woods is no longer hosting the 2025 Genesis Invitational. On Monday, Feb. 10, Woods, 49, announced on Instagram that he is “just not ready” to participate following the death of his mother last week.
“I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss,” Woods wrote in the post. “Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”Woods was set to tee off the tournament at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California on Feb. 13. The event would have been Woods’ first PGA Tour start since last year’s Open Championship and his sixth back surgery in September. The golfer announced his mother’s death on Feb. 4 in a social media post.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that I want to share that my dear mother Kultida Woods, passed away early this morning. My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable,” Woods wrote. His mother was 81. He adds: “She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible. She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie. Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family. Love you Mom.”
The week before, Kultida was spotted attending the golfer’s TGL match in South Florida, as reported by NBC Sports. Woods’ father Earl died in May 2006, after 37 years of marriage to Kultida.
Woods, who often dons an iconic red polo on Sundays, credits his mother for the fashion choice. Years ago, Woods wore blue to two tournaments while playing junior golf — losing both.“[I] switched to red and I went on a hot streak. And, well, I kept it,” he said. In 2009, he supported his mother’s instinct on his website: “You should always listen to your mom.”
