Timbers lean on their defense to post a shutout tie at Austin
@Source: oregonlive.com
The Portland Timbers came into Austin playing their best soccer of the season and bracing to face one of the hottest teams in the MLS. And while after 90 minutes the Timbers failed to score a goal, they’ll be more than happy to take the result. The Timbers (3-2-2, 11 points) played Austin FC (4-2-1, 13 points) to a 0-0 draw at Q2 Stadium, kicking off a stretch of four out of five games on the road by extending the club’s unbeaten streak to four matches. James Pantemis picked up his third clean sheet of the season for Portland, while Austin FC keeper Brad Stuver blocked five of Portland’s shots to extend Austin’s own unbeaten streak to four matches. More than a month after struggling to find much offense in Portland’s 1-0 win at Providence Park, both clubs continued to play high-possession, low-risk soccer when they picked things back up on Saturday. Austin had a pair of chances in the game’s opening 10 minutes, then nearly capitalized on a turnover just outside the box that was saved by a well-timed tackle from David Ayala in the 25th. The Timbers didn’t register a shot until a sneaky right-footed David Da Costa drive from the left side in the 33rd minute, while Felipe Mora tallied a decent attempt on net with a sliding shot that fired just off Austin keeper Brad Stuver before the close of the first half. Portland’s best chance of the match came early in the second half when Stuver stopped back-to-back shots by Santiago Moreno and Juan Mosquera at close range. And while Pantemis wasn’t challenged for much of the match, his leaping, left-handed save on a Brandon Vazquez header kept Portland in the match. Since allowing four goals in its season-opening loss to Vancouver, Portland has conceded just four goals in its last six games — with Saturday marking the club’s second consecutive shutout on the road. Next up: The Timbers face winless Sporting Kansas City on April 13 in Kansas City. — Tyson Alger
