From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Obisia Nwankpa, the renowned Nigerian boxing legend who passed away on June 2, 2025, at the age of 75. According to a statement issued by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu highlighted the lasting legacy Nwankpa leaves behind, not only as a champion in the ring but also as a mentor and coach. “The nation owes him a debt of gratitude for nurturing a new generation of boxers after retiring from active competition, including leading Nigeria’s boxing team to the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympics,” the President said. Nwankpa was a celebrated athlete who represented Nigeria at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, competing in the light-welterweight division. His illustrious career was marked by significant achievements, including gold medals at the 1973 All-Africa Games held in Lagos and the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand. Throughout his career, Nwankpa held several prestigious titles such as Nigerian Lightweight Champion, African Boxing Union (ABU) Light-Welterweight Champion, and Commonwealth Lightweight Champion, solidifying his status as one of Nigeria’s greatest boxing icons.
