Toblerone Dark bar discontinued as fans mourn 'sad day for world of chocolate'

Toblerone has unexpectedly axed one of its beloved chocolate bars. The Swiss chocolate giant confirmed it has discontinued its dark chocolate variant in the UK, in what has come as a shock and a blow to Brit chocolate lovers. Toblerone's owner, Mondelez, made the "difficult decision" to stop selling Toblerone Dark (360g) bars, adding: "While we understand that this may be disappointing for some consumers , we continue to invest in Toblerone." Having first appeared in 1969, Toblerone Dark, once described as "possibly the best chocolate ever," has delighted sweet-toothed consumers for over half a century. The decision by Mondelez International, an American conglomerate that took over the iconic Swiss chocolate brand in 2012 following Kraft's rebranding to Mondelez, has left many customers perplexed. The reaction on social media this Easter, when chocolate is at the forefront of everyone's mind and just as Brits are preparing to tuck into their favourite confectionary treat, suggests widespread anger over the move. One sad fan took to Facebook , complaining: "Dark chocolate version is the best!" while another bemoaned: "I only like dark chocolate... why are they discontinuing it? ? It is less sweet and healthier. Well, another good thing gone." A third added to the chorus of disappointment, commenting: "What a sad day for the world of chocolate." One reviewer even acclaimed the bar, saying: "This is possibly the best chocolate, if you can eat almonds and nougat with dark chocolate." One person shared their mother's sorrow online , writing: "My mum adores these!" while another declared: "Dreadful news, I enjoy these." The sweet giant remained tight-lipped on further specifics, including the reasons behind their latest business move. This multinational company, which now also owns Cadbury's , spans over 150 countries, yet it's currently uncertain whether the discontinuation of Toblerone Dark will be a global decision or one exclusive to the UK market. Toblerone has its origins in Switzerland, having been conjured up by Theodor Tobler and Emil Baumann back in 1908. The renowned confectionery's name cleverly combines “Tobler” with "Torrone," the latter being the Italian term for honey-almond nougat. Fans can still purchase milk and white chocolate versions of the bar, which remain available in most supermarkets and airport duty-free sections. Last year, the brand landed in controversy when it was prohibited from featuring the famous Swiss Matterhorn mountain on its packaging due to a shift in production location from Switzerland to Slovakia's Bratislava. The iconic imagery would have been in direct violation of Switzerland's Swissness Act implemented in 2017, which forbids the use of national icons and the Swiss cross on products not adhering to Swiss-origin criteria. According to this legislation, food items branding themselves with Swiss symbols or claiming "Swiss made" status must source at least 80 per cent of their raw ingredients from within the country's borders. Dairy products need to meet an even more stringent criterion, demanding 100 per cent Swiss origin. Given Toblerone's relocation of chocolate production outside Switzerland, the company had no choice but to amend "of Switzerland" to "established in Switzerland" on its packaging.
