BafflerMeal (2) Funniest 33 minutes ago I'll be crossing the Alps at San Gottardo tomorrow. Was open in record time this year. Dictatorial_Flair (2) Funniest 35 minutes ago Neat. And every time you think about how hot it is, it will get one degree hotter. (0) Funniest 35 minutes ago They need some of those snow making machines ski resorts have. More snow = More cold. Username checks out. New Rising Sun (2) Funniest 33 minutes ago "Climate scientists say the glaciers will disappear by the end of the century if global warming continues at its current rate." These ever-optimistic scientists need to work on their messaging. Stop saying "if ⟨global climate change thing⟩ continues at its current rate". I know it's a profession that calls for accuracy, but let's be real. People aren't going to change, so continuing at its current rate is your best-case scenario. More likely, many things will accelerate because no action will be taken and positive feedback loops will do their thing. They should probably instead start calling on individuals who will listen to them to simply to stop having children. Not because it'll fix anything, but because at some point we're going to cross a threshold where it becomes morally questionable to create a person knowing that they'll be living in some sort of wasteland or resource-war as adults. (6) Funniest 33 minutes ago BigGrnEggGriller: So? As always, the right wing idiot buries his head in the sand. Farking moron... (1) Funniest 33 minutes ago BigGrnEggGriller: So? Oh, because things have been going so great lately that there wasn't enough reason not to have them. If the global rise of fascism and the looming techno-distopia - both of which will be a huge farking problem within our own lifetimes - isn't going to stop people from having kids, some vague climate catastrophy a few generations from now isn't gonna do it. (0) Funniest 31 minutes ago *in recorded history. so 150 years or so, and the first 75 of that is semi reliable readings with large surface gaps. More likely, many things will accelerate because no action will be taken and positive feedback loops will do their thing. I agree in concept/vibe, but I've mentioned this before; it's not just a question of x climate thing will get more worse more faster. It's true, it probably will, but it's also much worse than that. There is plenty of possibility that these changes and feedback loops will interact in an unpredictable or currently un/under-studied way that will cause something totally new and horrible will start happening. Alternatively: if you think the climate know-knowns and know-unknowns are bad, wait till you get a load of the unknown-unknowns. SpectroBoy (0) Funniest 31 minutes ago swankywanky (0) Funniest 35 minutes ago Yeah, but last week it was in the upper 90's in Georgia and today is only going to get to 88. Checkmix, liberettos (2) Funniest 33 minutes ago Oh, it will get hotter. See, the thing with glaciers is you can't just put them back. It takes many many hundreds of years of prolonged cold to increase a glacier. All this wasted time trying to convince idiots we could "slow" or "reverse" climate change when really once it started over a hundred and fifty years ago, it was just going to accelerate. We needed to be planning for how we were going to accommodate living in it, and we haven't even done that. You jest but I'll put money on a non zero number of people ask chatgpt for repeated weather forecasts, despite pretty much every smartphone having a stock weather app. (0) Funniest 34 minutes ago Gyrfalcon: We needed to be planning for how we were going to accommodate living in it, and we haven't even done that. BitwiseShift (1) Funniest 32 minutes ago About 20 years ago I bought a new E Class Mercedes. Went to the Berner Oberland Alps. Got to use the AC in the car. My favorite Glacier had receeded by way too much. Hannibal's elephants at least won't have to wear snow shoes, more like Hawaiian shirts and sun glasses. (0) Funniest 31 minutes ago The most common temperature range for snowfall is between 25°F (-4°C) and 32°F (0°C). While snow can fall at slightly higher or lower temperatures, this range offers the ideal balance of cold enough for snow formation and warm enough to hold sufficient moisture. Alternatively: if you think the climate know-knowns and know-unknowns are bad, wait till you get a load of the unknown-unknowns. You ain't kidding.. supposedly, the Gulf Stream is about to collapse. If/when it does, we are pretty much screwed over in several areas. Potential Consequences A collapse could lead to: Northwestern Europe cooling dramatically, possibly by 3-5°C. Sea level rise along the U.S. East Coast (due to changes in ocean currents). Disruption of monsoon systems in South America, Africa, and Asia. Warming in the Southern Hemisphere, as heat gets redistributed. Collapse of the Amazon rainforest and accelerated ice melt in Greenland. Severe impacts on fisheries and marine ecosystems.
