These are your evening rugby headlines on Sunday, March 30. Dan Biggar involved in unusual incident Former Wales star Dan Biggar was caught up in an unusual incident during Toulon's Top 14 clash with Castres. After Toulon hooker Gianmarco Lucchesi scored his side's second try after the half-hour mark, Biggar lined up the conversion from the left side of the 22. As he took his run-up, Castres wingers Christian Ambadiang and Rémy Baget raced off their line and were almost level with Biggar's tee as he struck the ball. Between them they managed to get a hand to the ball, but even with the deflection, the kick looped between the posts for a successful conversion. However, Biggar wasn't pleased with what had happened and was heard calling out to referee Evan Urruzmendi: "It's too early!" as he suggested Ambadiang and Baget had jumped the gun in their charge down attempt. While replays seemed to suggest that they had set off simultaneously with Biggar's first move towards the ball, Urruzmendi agreed with the Welshman as he approached the Castres pair to give them a warning. "The conversion went in, but for me it's too close," he said. "For me, there was no step, so be careful with the next one." However, Ambadiang and Baget would go on to have the last laugh as their side pulled off a narrow 28-26 win over Biggar's Toulon. Wales prop hailed as world's best Wales Women's star Alex Callender has claimed teammate Gwenllian Pyrs is the "best loosehead prop in the world" after a fine individual display against England. Sale Sharks front rower Pyrs returned to the starting line-up for Sean Lynn's side for the Women's Six Nations clash at the Principality Stadium and, despite the rampant visitors romping to a 67-12 victory, impressed with her tireless workrate around the park and a strong showing at scrum-time. Pyrs won plaudits for her performance from her peers, with former Wales prop Cerys Hale - who retired from rugby last summer - describing her as "outstanding". However, vice-captain Callender - who has missed the start of this year's Six Nations campaign through injury - went further in her praise and claimed there is not a player in the men's or women's game that is better than Pyrs in her position. Taking to X, she wrote: "Gwenllian Pyrs is the best loose head prop in the world… men’s and women’s!!!" After the heavy loss, head coach Lynn said: "We have to get better, every game we've got to be getting better. We knew that there are going to be fixes, the defence system is something that we really need to be thinking about. "Everything I've talked about is making sure we're always moving forward, I thought some of our attack today was outstanding but we just fell away," he added. "Just keep believing and let's keep moving forward. We're all in this together." Saracens boost play-off hopes By Duncan Bech, PA England Rugby Correspondent Saracens’ decision to prioritise the Gallagher Premiership over Europe paid off as they boosted their play-off hopes by edging Leicester 29-22 at Mattioli Woods Welford Road. England stars Maro Itoje and Tom Willis were involved in league action for a second successive weekend after the Six Nations, meaning they would have to be stood down for Saturday’s Investec Champions Cup visit to Toulon. The decision was rewarded with a bonus-point victory that was founded on their lightning quick start and a strong second half as they benefited from the arrival of Ben Earl, Theo Dan, Nick Isiekwe and Alex Goode off the bench. It was Dan’s opportunistic 63rd-minute try, made possible by a Leicester line-out error, that proved the difference in pulsating clash that sees Saracens move within two points of the top four. Leicester were fresh from their 33-0 romp at Northampton but could not repeat those fireworks in another twist in a play-off race that will go down to the wire. Both sides lost key players early in the afternoon, Leicester’s Ollie Chessum withdrawing during the warm up and then Fraser Balmain of Saracens being helped off just seconds into the game. Saracens adjusted quickly to the loss of their tighthead prop by sending Jamie George over for a well worked try, although they were also penalised for demanding referee Luke Pearce punish Solomone Kata for use of the elbow. Leicester’s defence then parted for Juan Martin Gonzalez to add the visitors’ second following lively build-up play from Theo McFarland and George. The deficit spurred Tigers into action and, having wasted a series of chances, they pounced through Freddie Steward. Aided by the flood of penalties being conceded by Saracens, they struck again through a Handre Pollard drop-goal. Alex Lozowski responded in kind having missed a routine penalty but his side faced some anxious moments when England captain Itoje went down injured until he rose to his feet after receiving treatment. Leicester hit back on the brink of half-time with a forward try for Hanro Liebenberg and the South African was over again moments after the break, although his second was a more eye-catching score involving more intricate build-up. It was bettered by Saracens’ response through Angus Hall that was made possible by slick handling and a classy finish, before the scrum came to the visitors’ rescue when they were under pressure on their own line. Earl, Dan, Goode and Isiekwe came on to give Saracens renewed energy and when Leicester blundered at a line-out, Dan capitalised to score what proved to be the pivotal try. 'Relative unknown' backed for England By PA Sport Staff George Skivington believes England coach Steve Borthwick will have liked what he saw of centre Seb Atkinson following his hat-trick in Gloucester’s crushing 53-28 win against Bristol. Skivington also praised former England man Christian Wade, who scored three tries and now has more hat-tricks than any other Premiership player. Wade, 33, leapt above Chris Ashton with his seventh hat-trick as Gloucester ran in nine tries and moved third in the table, just behind Bears. Boss Skivington said: “Seb is still a relative unknown in terms of what he can do on the field and I hope Steve can find a place for him (in the England squad). It might have been a very good time for Seb to get that hat-trick with Steve in the crowd. “There are a lot of good twelves around in the Premiership but I feel Seb has got something more than most. He is an outstanding player and we saw what he can do today.” On Wade, who now has 89 tries – 12 behind the Premiership’s all-time leading try scorer Ashton – he said: “Christian has been excellent since coming to Kingsholm. He’s got so much pace and quality, and he’s very clinical.” Wade, who spent time in the NFL before returning to rugby union, said: “There was a lot of energy out there and it was fun. I’m really enjoying my time at Gloucester. Getting the hat-trick was a bonus because it’s all about the team getting that big win and bonus point to keep us in the hunt.” Centre Atkinson said: “It wasn’t a bad day out! It was all a bit of a blur as I don’t score too many tries and that was my first hat-trick. We came out firing. We wanted our attack to take on theirs and it worked well.”
