Welsh trio attracting English interest
Premiership clubs are reportedly circling to take three of Welsh rugby's brightest talents across the Severn Bridge.
Blair Murray, Ellis Mee and Dan Edwards are said to be all attracting admiring glances from English outfits as the game in Wales goes through a difficult period on and off the pitch.
The Daily Mail report that Scarlets pair Murray and Mee - who broke onto the scene during this year's Six Nations campaign - have suitors in England despite being under contract.
Murray was playing club rugby in New Zealand this time last year, while Mee was on the radar of both Leicester Tigers and Bristol Bears before he swapped Nottingham for west Wales.
Edwards, meanwhile, is also garnering attention from numerous clubs, the report says. The Welsh Rugby Union are in a state of flux at present, with no head coach or director of rugby in place ahead of a summer tour to Japan.
Bielle-Biarrey player of Six Nations
By PA Sport Staff
France wing Louis Bielle-Biarrey has been named 2025 Guinness men’s Six Nations player of the championship.
Bielle-Biarrey scored tries in every game of Les Bleus’ title-winning campaign, finishing on a Six Nations record of eight for the tournament.
He collected 65 per cent of more than 121,400 votes cast by fans, Six Nations Rugby said.
Bielle-Biarrey was nominated alongside England back Tommy Freeman, Scotland full-back Blair Kinghorn and Italy centre Tommaso Menoncello.
Connacht without Prendergast for Cardiff
Connacht will be without captain Cian Prendergast when Cardiff arrive for their European clash at the weekend.
Cardiff head to the Dexcom Stadium on Saturday (8pm) in Challenge Cup action. But the hosts will be shorn of their fly-half after a head injury he sustained in a clash with Alex Nankivell last weekend in which he was hospitalised.
“It’s knock-out rugby and we’re at home, which is a massive advantage,” said scrum and contact coach Cullie Tucker. We obviously know each other very well. Both teams have played each other twice [this season], so it’s a game we’re massively looking forward to.
“They have a lot of Welsh internationals back as well, which will boost them, so it’s going to be big challenge for us.”
“He was in first thing Monday morning," Tucker added on Prendergast. "He’s been around the squad helping us prep, helping us put plans in place for both sides of the ball, so he’s doing very well, in good spirits, and in a good place at the moment.”
Tucker added Prendergast is “well on the road to recovery” and all his scans turned out clear.
Schoeman ignoring Lions talk
By Anthony Brown, PA
Pierre Schoeman will not allow the possibility of British and Irish Lions involvement this summer to distract him from helping Edinburgh enjoy a strong finish to the season.
The Scotland loosehead has been touted as a potential candidate for inclusion in Andy Farrell’s squad for the tour of Australia, which is named on May 8.
While Schoeman has written down Lions selection as one of his goals, he stressed that his focus for now remains firmly on helping Edinburgh get past South African outfit Lions in the Challenge Cup this Friday and then ensuring they qualify for the URC play-offs.
“It’s always in the back of your mind,” the prop said of the Lions tour. “However, when we do our prep for the match on the weekend, it’s not near what you focus on.
“You just focus on what’s important now, and that is the Lions game this week. Everything else, you switch off. Once we come in here, we focus, we prep, and you make sure you’re on it.
“There’s no personal distractions, no future distractions. It’s just about the present, delivering.
“It (the Lions) is obviously something I’ve written down as a goal, and hopefully it will be. But the only controllables you can have is play bloody well for Edinburgh, do everything you can, leave no stone unturned.
“Give all the sacrifices that you can with your body on the line. If you train hard enough for your club and play well, that opportunity may come.”
Schoeman is one of a few Edinburgh players – along with Duhan van der Merwe, Darcy Graham and Jamie Ritchie – who would appear to be in the mix for a Lions call.
Having firmly established himself as Scotland’s first-choice loosehead since making his debut three and a half years ago, the South Africa-born forward, 30, feels his game is in good shape.
“I’m really feeling good physically and mentally but I’m always looking to improve,” he said. “As a prop, your first job is scrum, set-piece.
“Every training, every session, I try to get better, whether that’s in the gym or on the pitch and then delivering on the Friday or Saturday.
“I’m happy, but there’s always room for improvement. The body and the mind’s flying. I’m feeling really good.”
