Franco Smith speaks on Wales links
Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith was once again asked about the vacant Wales head coach role, revealing where his focus is right now.
Smith's reigning champions defeated Munster 28-25 on Friday night at Scotstoun, with a whole host of international stars returning to the fore. After discussing the impending departures of important players, who are leaving for pastures new at the end of the season, Smith was asked about his future.
“For now, it’s status quo," began Smith.
"There are 12 possible games left in this season. That’s the focus for now. If we’re going to get distracted with other things, we might fall short. I’m here at the Warriors. We’re going to climb in and make the best of every minute that I’m here."
He had been linked with both the Wales head coach role and the Scotland job too, with Gregor Townsend's contract up at the end of next season.
Despite his vague response, Smith has spoken directly about the Wales job and what an honour it would be to take on such a role.
"This is a difficult one to answer. Obviously, my focus is absolutely here with the squad for now. I’ve got no real comment to make," he said in February, after being asked about the speculation.
“It’s a compliment to be mentioned in all these conversations and I’m appreciative of that. For now, I’m just focusing on what’s going to happen next year."
All Blacks legend dies
All Blacks legend Alex ‘Grizz’ Wyllie has died at the age of 80.
The flanker played 40 matches for New Zealand, 11 of which were Tests, and captained the country on three occasions between 1970 and 1973. He went on to become head coach, and remained in charge of the iconic side between 1987 and 1991, winning 58 out of 64.
After his incredible success rate as a coach - 91% wins to be exact - he went on to take roles with England, Ireland, South Africa and Argentina, helping the Pumas to their first ever World Cup quarter-final in 1999.
Tributes have been paid by those involved in the game Down Under.
"Grizz Wyllie was a true giant of our game – not just in the way he played, but in the way he led and inspired those around him," began New Zealand Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson
"Grizz was a larger-than-life character who made an immense impact as a player and coach, and his legacy will live on in New Zealand and World rugby forever. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the wider rugby community at this difficult time."
NZR chair David Kirk added: "Grizz Wyllie embodied everything that makes New Zealand rugby special – toughness, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. I remember him as a fierce competitor, an uncompromising player and a tough coach. His passing is a huge loss to our rugby family."
London Welsh promoted
London Welsh have been promoted to the National League tier of English rugby.
Welsh defeated Wimbledon 31-17, securing a bonus point in the process of gaining promotion to the National League. Going into the game, they were top of the table on 97 points, eight points in front of Jersey RFC.
They were competing in the Regional One South Central league, and will now ascend to the National League Two East. There are three National League Two divisions divided up in north, west and east.
If Welsh get promoted again next season, they will be in the National League One, which is two divisions below the Gallagher Premiership.
Of course, Welsh were previously in the Premiership, but were relegated in 2015, and were kicked out of professional rugby two years later by the RFU. They were forced to immediately forfeit their place in the Championship after falling into severe financial difficulty.
Wales icon Gavin Henson previously played for the club, with legends John Dawes, JPR Williams and Gerald Davies also turning out for the exiles.
