Welsh rugby crisis debate to be held in front of live audience
A television debate on the current crisis in Welsh rugby will air tonight, with a former Wales captain on the panel.
Another winless Six Nations campaign saw Wales pick up the Wooden Spoon for a second successive year, with their dismal losing run now standing at 17 straight Test matches. With Warren Gatland gone, there are big decisions for the WRU to make ahead of this summer's tour of Japan with the national sport now at an all-time low.
With so many questions now surrounding the future of Welsh rugby, S4C will broadcast a one-hour special debate on Monday night (9pm), which will be recorded in front of a live audience in Llanelli.
The debate will be hosted by Scrum V host Lauren Jenkins, with the panel including former Wales captain Gwyn Jones, ex-international wing Shane Williams, former Wales Women’s star Caryl James and ex-head of Sport Wales, Huw Jones.
Everything from grassroots rugby to the performance of the senior men's and women's teams and management, governance and rugby in the regions will be discussed, with contributions invited from a 40-strong audience made up of rugby players, experts and members of the public.
The debate will air as a Welsh-language transmission, but it will also be available with subtitles on BBC iPlayer and S4C Clic, while English language simultaneous translation will be available on S4C’s Red Button service.
Executive producer Catrin Evans said: "There are so many questions surrounding the future of Welsh rugby at the moment, this programme is an important forum for all rugby-lovers in Wales and further afield.
"With a knowledgeable presenter and panel, and a fiery audience we’ll unpack the issues and discuss ways to fix this crisis in Welsh rugby."
Wales star summoned
Wales Women No.8 Georgia Evans will face a disciplinary panel tomorrow after being sent off during her side's Six Nations defeat to Scotland.
The 28-year-old was shown a yellow card at the end of the first half in Edinburgh on Saturday for illegally collapsing a maul. However, moments after returning from the sin-bin after the break, she was awarded a second yellow for a high tackle on Scotland full-back Chloe Rollie and promptly shown a red.
Evans will now attend a hearing on Tuesday, where she will learn her fate ahead of this weekend's clash with England at the Principality Stadium.
A statement from the Women's Six Nations read: "Wales Number 8, Georgia Evans, will attend an independent disciplinary hearing after she was awarded a red card having received two yellow cards for acts of foul play contrary to Laws 9.20(c) and 9.13 respectively in the Guinness Women’s Six Nations match between Scotland and Wales on Saturday 22nd March 2025.
"The player will attend the hearing via video conference before an independent Disciplinary Committee consisting of Marcello D’Orey – chair (Portugal), joined by Val Toma (Romania) and Stefan Terblanche (South Africa). The hearing will take place on Tuesday 25th March 2025 at 4pm (GMT)."
Dupont goes under the knife
France captain Antoine Dupont has undergone surgery after rupturing his ACL during the Six Nations.
The superstar scrum-half was forced off the field less than half an hour into his side's round-four clash with Ireland earlier this month and is now expected to be sidelined for between six and nine months. It is the second time that the French talisman has suffered the injury, having been kept out of action for eight months with it back in 2018.
According to French outlet L'Equipe, Dupont went under the knife in Toulouse on Monday, having also suffered injuries to his "medial meniscus and collateral ligament” as well.
After suffering the injury in Dublin, the 2021 World Rugby player of the year wrote on X: "The heart hurts even more than the knee when you have to leave your friends before the last step. I am proud of what we accomplished yesterday and with all my strength with you, you will do it.
"Rupture of the cruciate ligaments. This is the beginning of a new challenge, I'll see you in a few months on the field."
Springbok signs for Sale
By PA Sport Staff
Sale have signed South African flanker Jacques Vermeulen from their Gallagher Premiership rivals Exeter.
Play-off challengers Sale said Vermeulen has agreed a two-year deal from the start of next season. The 30-year-old joined Exeter in 2019 and has made more than 100 appearances for the Chiefs.
Sale rugby director Alex Sanderson said: “Jacques has been one of the most consistent performers in his position in the league ever since he arrived at Exeter.
“His enthusiasm is infectious and he has always been a nightmare to play against. He is one of those players you want on your team because of his unparalleled, unrelenting physicality and work-rate.
“He is a real enforcer, his ability to repeat physical actions is second to none and he will complement what we have already got.”
Vermeulen was a key member of Exeter’s squad during Chiefs’ Champions Cup and Premiership double-winning 2019-2020 season.
Exeter rugby director Rob Baxter, whose signings for next term include Australia international back-row forward Tom Hooper, said: “Jacques is one of the players who has been here in one of our most successful periods as a club.
“He came into the club alongside the likes of Jannes Kirsten, and the two of them really set a tone in terms of the level of our training and the physicality we were able to bring to games for extended periods.”
