Over the last decade, average speed cameras have been added to some of our region's busiest roads in an effort to make motorists slow down, wary of the threat of fines and penalty points. The number one location for fines is the A4540 New John Street West. Almost 8,900 vehicles have been clocked speeding on the route, which runs between Hockley Circus and Dartmouth Circus, in the fist half of 2025 - roughly 60 every day on average. Other hotspots include Leebank Middleway/Belgrave Middleway and the A45 Coventry Road. It confirmed how average speed cameras are very much working in our region and are not just for show, as some motorists may mistakenly believe. Rather than fixed cameras which allow motorists to suddenly slow down, average speed cameras measure vehicles' speeds over a sustained period, keeping drivers guessing about how long they are being monitored for. Motoring organisation the RAC says: "Average speed cameras use automatic number plate reading (ANPR) technology to record your speed between two points on a road. "The cameras also record the date and time as you pass between each point, enabling the camera to calculate your average speed. "Average speed cameras are a common sight on UK roads. You’re also likely to encounter these cameras at roadworks, as well."
