REGIONAL police forces face a variety of new challenges with law enforcement in the areas of drugs, human trafficking, the return of deportees, and border violations.
A meeting of Pacific police commissioners being held in New Zealand heard concerns and discussed viable solutions.
New Zealand Police Commissioner Richard Chambers said there was a need for forces to tackle issues together.
“The common theme coming through this week and even when I visited the Pacific, was the threat to our region around transnational organised crime,” Chambers told Pacific Mornings.
“And coming with that are the enablers … things like violence and technology, including cyber activity and corruption.
“So, we’ve got to put the hard issues on the table and talk about what it is that we as commissioners can focus on and support each other on if we’re going to reduce the threat and ensure that the safety and security of the Pacific region is the best that it can be.”
The commissioners heard that INTERPOL – the International Criminal Police Organisation – would set up a presence in the region. Previously, INTERPOL was represented in the Pacific by desk officers from local police forces.
