Tottenham player ratings vs Frankfurt: Micky van de Ven and Lucas Bergvall step up but Brennan Johnson quiet
@Source: standard.co.uk
Tottenham were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final in north London.
Spurs suffered a nightmare start when Hugo Ekitike rifled home a low effort from 25 yards after just six minutes.
Pedro Porro levelled the game with a lovely first-time flick from James Maddison’s cross and Spurs pushed hard for a winner after the interval.
Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur both struck the crossbar, the former with a stunning strike, while the Uruguayan, Heung-min Son and James Maddison all had efforts saved.
Here’s how we rated the Spurs players…
Guglielmo Vicario 7
Well beaten by Ekitike’s great strike and otherwise untroubled, aside from a routine save from the Frenchman’s effort.
Pedro Porro 6
Levelled the game with a gorgeous flick but did not get tight to Ekitike for Frankfurt’s early opener and guilty of some loose touches.
Cristian Romero 7
Set the tone with his aggressive pressing but occasionally caught out of position.
Micky van de Ven 8
Lifted the crowd with some trademark sprints to snuff out Frankfurt’s counter-attacks. Had a stoppage-time effort agoinisingly clawed over the bar
Destiny Udogie 7
Went some way to justifying his selection ahead of Djed Spence with an energetic display from left-back. His final ball need finessing.
Rodrigo Bentancur 7
Ate up the ground and went close to a goal when his header came back off the crossbar. Had another header saved from a similar position.
Lucas Bergvall 8
Struck the crossbar with a sensational long-range strike in the second half, leading to a sustained spell of Spurs pressure and chances.
James Maddison 7
Made Spurs’ equaliser with a lovely dart and cut-back, and was constantly looking to make things happen. Tested Kauã Santos with a close-range strike.
Brennan Johnson 4
Picked ahead of Wilson Odobert and others but missed his big chance, blazing over the bar from Djed Spence’s cross, and was otherwise quiet.
Heung-min Son 5
His final ball was erratic but he started the move leading to Porro’s goal and forced a sharp save from Kauã Santos in the second half.
Dominic Solanke 5
Held up the ball and linked play, including in the build-up to the equaliser but squandered a couple of promising sights of goal.
Djed Spence (Udogie 79’) 7
Immediately created a big chance for Johnson with a low cross.
Mathys Tel (Son 79’) 6
Limited time to make an impact from the left of the front three.
Pape Matar Sarr (Maddison 79’) 6
Added fresh legs to the midfield and won a dangerous late free-kick.
Richarlison (Solanke 88’) 6
Returned from injury and will hope for a start against Wolves on Sunday.
Not used: Austin, Whiteman, Davies, Gray, Bissouma, Moore, Odobert.
