The Namibia Traditional Sports and Games Federation has officially launched its National Tournament Series, signaling the country’s proactive preparations for the 2026 African Championship Cup.
The Federation is actively inviting school principals to register their learners for the upcoming tournaments, with the deadline for registration set for 11 June.
According to the Federation, these forthcoming events are designed to significantly elevate Namibia’s presence in the continental sporting arena. Furthermore, the initiative aims to revitalize and celebrate Namibia’s rich cultural heritage through the platform of traditional sports.
“We have organised the Principals’ Sports Tournament alongside the Principals’ Cheese and Wine Event, both set to take place in July. These events mark the beginning of Namibia’s journey towards the Championship Cup,” they added.
They said the tournaments are not just local celebrations; they form part of a continental campaign, as winners from these national events will automatically qualify to represent Namibia at the Championship Cup.
“Our aim is to use traditional sports and games to foster unity, national pride, and youth engagement. These events are about more than just competition, they are about reclaiming identity and empowering the next generation through culture-rooted sporting excellence,” they said.
They informed that the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the African Traditional Sports Confederation, Nelson Barde will be visiting Namibia in June to provide technical support and strategic guidance as the nation prepares to host and compete in the Championship Cup.
“This visit underscores Namibia’s growing stature in the continental traditional sports movement and the Confederation’s commitment to grassroots development,” they added.
They said the 2025 tournaments will feature a variety of indigenous games including traditional board games, dance contests, folk wrestling, traditional soccer and team based strategy games, drawing participation from schools and communities nationwide.
“These efforts reflect a national commitment to positioning Namibia as a leading force in African traditional sports and games. We call on the media, corporate partners, educators, and community leaders to support and amplify this historic movement, through participation in the upcoming Principals Events,” they concluded.
