Motorists are bracing for a hectic Easter as an estimated 19.1 million drivers are set to hit the roads on Good Friday. The AA has forecast that the later timing of Easter weekend this year, three weeks after 2024's date, will lead to a 15% surge in bank holiday traffic, with many hoping for a spell of warmer weather. Drivers should expect heavy traffic around urban centres, shopping complexes, and key motorways including the M6 near Birmingham, the M25's southern and western stretches between the M23 and M40, the M5 around Bristol, and the A303 in Wiltshire. According to the AA, travel numbers will peak at 19.1 million on Good Friday, followed by 18.5 million on Easter Saturday and 18.2 million on both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, based on a survey of 11,233 of its members. Shaun Jones, the AA patrol of the year, emphasised the importance of "simple checks" on tyre pressure, oil, and coolant levels, stating: "With so many people planning to travel this Easter, it is crucial to ensure your vehicle is in top condition." To manage the expected congestion, National Highways has initiated Operation Brock in Kent, which includes narrow lanes and a reduced speed limit of 50mph for the Easter period. Motorists travelling on the M20 motorway to or from the Channel ports could face delays over the Easter bank holiday period. Operation Brock, a traffic management system implemented on the M20 between Junctions 8 and 9, has been put in place to ease congestion. According to research conducted by VisitEngland, millions of Britons plan to take a domestic holiday this Easter, bringing in a predicted £3.9 billion boost to the economy. Approximately 10.6 million UK adults are intending to take an Easter break within the UK, while an additional 3.4 million remain undecided, largely due to weather conditions and cost concerns. The chief executive of VisitEngland, Patricia Yates, stated: "Tourism businesses and destinations will be looking to the critical Easter weekend for much-needed cash flow after the lean winter months, so it's encouraging to see many of us are planning a holiday at home. "The cost of living remains a concern, and while people are still keen to take a break, many are booking late, taking shorter breaks, and wanting to save on accommodation, activities and eating out, making it difficult for businesses to plan in advance." Easter travel plans for thousands are set to be disrupted as Network Rail undertakes extensive engineering work. London Euston, the UK's 10th busiest railway station, will bear the brunt of the impact with no services to or from Milton Keynes on Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday, and a reduced timetable on Good Friday and Easter Monday due to overhead electric lines renewals and drainage improvements. West Coast Main Line services will begin and end at Carlisle, with replacement buses serving stations further north. Meanwhile, aviation analytics firm Cirium has revealed that 11,282 flights are scheduled to leave UK airports between Good Friday and Easter Monday. National Rail says for the Carlisle / Glasgow / Edinburgh line from Saturday 19 to Monday 21 April, track renewals will be made to improve reliability in the Carlisle area. Buses will replace trains between Carlisle and Glasgow via Lockerbie; Carlisle and Dumfries; and Carlisle and Edinburgh. The most popular international destinations for UK departures this Easter are Dublin, Amsterdam, Malaga, Alicante and Mallorca.
