Troubling update for Max Verstappen as Red Bull concedes no major upgrade is planned
@Source: sportskeeda.com
In a troubling update for Max Verstappen, Red Bull's Helmut Marko has conceded that there are no major upgrades planned for the car in the near future. The Dutch driver is currently 3rd in the championship, but after a disastrous race in Barcelona, where a late-race penalty meant that he was P10, the driver is now 49 points behind Oscar Piastri.Max Verstappen has done an impressive job all season when it comes to extracting the best possible results from the Red Bull. Unfortunately for him, the car is just slower than McLaren by around 3 tenths in general, and that kind of gap cannot be usurped by the driver. The team and the driver were certainly hopeful that the Woking-based team could have been pegged by the FIA clampdown on flexi wings, but that didn't materialize.McLaren was quite clearly the fastest car around Barcelona, and Red Bull was unable to keep up. The only way Max Verstappen could now hope to keep up with or usurp the championship lead is if the team brings a set of upgrades that help him. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the Milton Keynes-based squad is going to bring anything major.Writing about the team's planned upgrades in his column in Speedweek, Red Bull's Helmut Marko confirmed that the team would continue to bring a few minor things here and there, but nothing major is planned. He did, however, add that the team would continue to work on the car until there's a chance for the championship. He wrote,"We're working tirelessly on this and will continue to make small adjustments, but nothing major is planned. We've had some major updates in the past, such as a new underbody and new sidepods. But now it's more about the details. We'll continue developing as long as there's a chance in the World Championship. After that, the focus will shift entirely to the 2026 project."Red Bull has the perfect driver in Max Verstappen but other factors have to workMax Verstappen is currently 49 points behind McLaren's Oscar Piastri, and for the driver to win the championship, Red Bull needs to close the gap to the Woking-based team. Talking about how to win a drivers' championship, you need a car that's competitive on all tracks. Marko conceded that the team had the best driver in Verstappen, but other aspects needed to catch up. He said,"To win the Drivers' Championship, we need a car that's competitive on all tracks, not just on specific circuits. That's not enough for the World Championship. Against the currently strong McLaren team, you only have a chance if everything goes perfectly. We have the perfect driver, but all the factors have to be right – the pit stops, the strategy, the car, and the tire wear."Max Verstappen is chasing Michael Schumacher's feat of winning 5 consecutive titles this season. If Red Bull doesn't improve, it would be hard to see him emulate the German.
