Trump considers lowering marijuana drug class

Donald Trump has said he is “looking at” reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug, days after he attended a $1m-per-head fundraiser with industry leaders. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Mr Trump said: “We’re looking at reclassification, and we’ll make a determination over, I’d say, the next few weeks.” The US president said the issue of whether to lower the classification of the drug, which is legal in the majority of US states, is “very complicated”. He added: “I’ve heard great things having to do with medical and bad things having to do with just about everything else.” His comments come days after the Wall Street Journal reported Mr Trump had floated the idea of reclassifying marijuana at a fundraising dinner held at his New Jersey golf club. Guests at the dinner were said to have included Kim Rivers, the chief executive of one of the largest marijuana companies, Trulieve, as well as the chief executive of Pfizer, cryptocurrency executives and political advisers. Cannabis firms have enlisted the help of some of Washington’s key lobbyists and advisers to Mr Trump, as well as having donated millions to Mr Trump’s political groups. A group called American Rights and Reform PAC, which has reportedly been backed by the marijuana industry, gave $1m to Mr Trump’s PAC. The Biden administration started the process of reclassifying marijuana from a Schedule I drug to Schedule III in 2024. Such a move would not legalise the drug, but criminal penalties would be lessened. It would allow for tax breaks on some marijuana companies, as well as further research opportunities and open the door for pharmaceutical companies to become involved in the sale and distribution of the drug where it is legal. In 2024 Mr Trump said he would vote for an ultimately unsuccessful Florida amendment that would have legalised marijuana in the state. A senior administration source told the WSJ that while Mr Trump was not a fan of cannabis, he was keen on taking on cultural issues that have broad support among 80 per cent of the public.
