Trump Tariffs: India's Auto Sector To Benefit Indirectly? Here's What To Expect
@Source: news18.com
Donald Trump announced new reciprocal tariffs on several nations, aimed at restructuring the trade imbalances. Several sectors in India will face the burnt of the move because of their export-orient nature. As per new changes, a 25 per cent tariff is imposed on all cars imported in US from outside.
The recent imposition of U.S. tariffs has had a noticeable effect on India’s automobile sector, with varying consequences across different segments. While some segments stand to gain, others face increased challenges due to higher costs and trade barriers.
1. Beneficial Impact on Auto Components Industry
India’s auto components sector stands to benefit indirectly from the higher tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Chinese auto parts. With U.S. firms seeking alternative suppliers, Indian manufacturers of auto components are likely to see increased demand for their products. India exports nearly $2 billion worth of auto components to the U.S. annually, and the shift away from China could provide a significant growth opportunity for Indian exporters in this space.
2. Limited Impact on Two-Wheelers & Motorcycles
The U.S. has imposed high tariffs on motorcycles exceeding 800cc, affecting brands like Royal Enfield and Harley-Davidson, which export motorcycles from India. However, India’s overall two-wheeler exports to the U.S. remain relatively small, meaning that the broader impact of these tariffs is limited. While the tariff hike is certainly a challenge for certain companies, its overall effect on India’s two-wheeler industry is minimal.
3. Increased Costs for Indian Auto Manufacturers
On the downside, the U.S. has imposed substantial tariffs on steel (25%) and aluminum (10%), which has raised costs for Indian automakers. Companies like Tata Motors, which owns Jaguar Land Rover, and Mahindra & Mahindra, are experiencing higher production costs due to these tariffs on essential metals. This not only impacts their cost structure but could also affect their competitiveness in both the domestic and international markets.
4. U.S. Tariffs on China: Indirect Benefits for India
One of the more positive outcomes for India has been the indirect benefits from the U.S. tariffs on Chinese auto parts. As Chinese suppliers face higher costs and reduced demand, Indian auto parts exporters are positioned to take advantage of the situation by offering more competitive pricing. This shift has the potential to boost India’s exports to the U.S., especially in the components space.
5. Electric Vehicle (EV) Sector: Mixed Impact
The EV sector presents a mixed impact for India. On one hand, the U.S. has imposed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle (EV) batteries and components, creating an opportunity for Indian manufacturers to step in and fill the gap. On the other hand, India is highly dependent on China for its supply of lithium-ion batteries, a critical component for EVs. This dependency could drive up costs for domestic EV manufacturers, potentially dampening the growth prospects of India’s EV sector if costs become prohibitive.
Overall, the impact of U.S. tariffs on India’s automobile sector is complex and multifaceted. While the auto components industry stands to benefit from a shift away from Chinese suppliers, other segments like the auto manufacturing and two-wheeler industries face challenges due to higher costs and tariffs. The EV sector could see both opportunities and risks depending on how global supply chains evolve. For now, India’s auto sector must navigate these shifting dynamics carefully to capitalize on the opportunities while managing the associated risks.
