President Trump is to hit the UK on a holiday tonight but the US President might not receive a warm welcome – as Scottish police expect protests to overshadow his holibobs. Despite the predictions of protests the Scottish Labour MP Ian Murray has claimed Trump will be greeted with a "warm welcome" by the UK Government upon arrival in Scotland. The Scottish Secretary is set to formally greet the US President as he disembarks from Air Force One at Prestwick Airport this evening. After touching down the US President is scheduled to visit his Turnberry Hotel and golf resort – located 35 miles to the south. Trump is expected to have a meeting with Keir Starmer in South Ayrshire in the next few days after which they will journey to Aberdeenshire for the President's official inauguration of a new golf course at his Menie Estate. Murray has claimed the UK is ready to extend a "warm welcome" to the president, acknowledging the longstanding bonds between the two nations. The Labour MP has said: "Of course it's a warm welcome. We would always have a warm welcome for the president of the United States. "The office of the president of the United States and the office of the Prime Minister are ones that work very, very closely together, and should do, because it's in our national interest to do so. "We should make sure those relationships are in place because it's important for our defence, our security, our economy – especially for jobs – and it's really, really important to the finer details of the US trade deal that's been done." Murray's previously supported for a 2019 Commons motion – which he endorsed alongside Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Health Secretary Wes Streeting. The motion accused the president of "misogynism, racism and xenophobia" but Murray's recent remarks reflect a very different stance. When questioned about his backing of the motion Murray sidestepped and emphasised the significance of the bilateral ties. Murray mentioned the Scottish Secretary is obliged to receive international guests with due respect, reports the Daily Record . During the anticipated visit protests are expected in certain areas of Scotland – leading to increased demand on police resources and calls for additional officers from other UK forces. The Scottish Police Federation, representing frontline officers, has voiced concerns that policing will be "seriously affected". Scottish Conservative MP Andrew Bowie lambasted Murray for his apparent change of face regarding Trump's visit, commenting: "Ian Murray's desperate squirming was the definition of a car-crash interview. He had no credible explanation for his complete U-turn on the importance of President Trump visiting this country." Bowie offered his interpretation: "So let me help him: in 2019 he was shamelessly playing to the gallery like a student politician, whereas today he is a government minister forced to get real and behave like a grown-up." He concluded with a pointed remark: "I'm glad that Ian Murray has belatedly recognised how vital it is for Scotland to welcome, and work constructively with, the US President – but he'd have more credibility if he put his hands up and owned his past juvenile opportunism."
