Washington: US President Donald Trump has reportedly come under fire for spending a staggering USD 10.7 million of taxpayer money on golf trips since retaking office last month. It has been claimed in the revelation that Trump's golf trips have cost American taxpayers millions in just four weekends since taking office. The US President's extravagant expenses have raised the eyebrows of critics, especially given Trump's campaign promises to save average Americans money and his recent moves to cut funds in various heads across the world. Trump's golf-related expenses, which are expected to recur most weekends, have flown under the radar of Elon Musk and his team, who have been scrutinising the federal budget. The critics argue that despite pointing out five- and six-figure contracts as wasteful, Musk's team have ignored Trump's seven-figure golf trips.The critics have pointed out the expenses as hypocrisy of Trump's actions. Jordan Libowitz of the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington criticised Trump's actions, saying, "It's clear that when the Trump administration considers the definition of corruption and wasteful spending, it doesn't count spending that ends up in the president's pockets."Libowitz further added, "By visiting his for-profit businesses roughly a third of his days in office, Trump is directing government spending to follow him there, and profiting off the trip."The USD 10.7 million tally is based on a 2019 report by the Government Accountability Office, which broke down the costs of Trump's first trips to Mar-a-Lago during his first term. The report estimated each trip cost USD 3,383,250, with about one-third being the flight cost of Air Force One.Trump's golf expenses have been a recurring controversy, with his first term totalling USD 152 million over four years for 293 golf days at his resorts.On the contrary, former President Joe Biden's weekend trips to his Delaware homes cost a fraction of Trump's expenses, with helicopter trips costing about USD 150,000 and Air Force One trips totalling about USD 500,000.Libowitz also criticised Trump's actions, saying, “It would be one thing if he went to Camp David every few days to hit golf balls. It's hard to see this as anything other than using the presidency to prop up his businesses.”
