Two junior teammates battle in playoff for Skyland Conference individual title
@Source: nj.com
The time was right for Ridge junior Enzo Allain. Allain drained a 40-foot putt on the first playoff hole to edge fellow teammate and junior Ethan Gallagher and capture individual medalist honors at the Skyland Conference Boys Championship Tuesday at Heron Glen Golf Course in Ringoes. He made the winning putt on the par 4, 449-yard 18th hole. Both players shot 2-under 70s in regulation with Allain having a perfect back nine with two birdies and seven pars. Gallagher had three birdies on the back nine highlighted by one on the par 5, 473-yard 16th hole. “Coming off my win at the Red Devil Invitational last Friday, my game continued to feel great. I kept the ball in the fairway today and constantly gave myself scoring opportunities. I was very proud of how the team played today as we managed to just beat out the others, but a little unfortunate the playoff had to be against my teammate. Congrats to Enzo on the win. Deserves it after that putt!” said Gallagher, who shot a solid 3-under 69 after a bogey on his first hole to win by one shot at the Red Devil. The Bernards duo of freshman DJ Allen and junior Noah Ochab each shot 1-under 71 to finish tied for third, while Pingry sophomore Preston Devieux (1 over 73) finished solo fifth. Ridge, No. 16 in the latest NJ.com Top 20, edged No. 15. Pingry by one stroke, 305-306, to capture the conference team title, snapping Hunterdon Central’s three-year win streak. Last year, Pingry tied for first with Hunterdon Central but lost on the first playoff hole. All four players from each team played the par 3, 158-yard 17th hole. Hunterdon Central parred out to win the crown. Junior Kevin Zugale (82) and sophomore Robbie Smith (83) also contributed to the Red Devils win. Bernards (308), Bridgewater-Raritan (320), and Hunterdon Central (321) rounded out the top five. 20 schools (80 golfers) competed under beautiful skies on the par 72, 6,531-yard Hunterdon County layout.
