Two sisters drowned in swimming pools in Snowdonia after travelling to the beauty spot with uni pals, an inquest has heard. Hajra Zahid, 29, and Haleema Zahid, 25, were pulled from pools on the Watkin Path in Eryri National Park , which leads to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon, North Wales, on June 11. An inquest opening on Wednesday heard the sisters were born in Rawalpindi in Pakistan, but lived in Maltby, near Rotherham, South Yorks., and were studying at nearby University of Chester, North Wales Live reports . Assistant coroner Sarah Riley was told that Hajra was declared dead at 10.48pm and Haleema was declared dead at 10.49pm after being pulled from the water. They were both identified by their friend Zeb Luqman to a North Wales Police officer, the hearing was told. Consultant pathologist Dr Zain Mehdi, who conducted post mortem examinations, gave the provisional cause of death as drowning, the inquest heard. Ms Riley adjourned the inquests to allow the investigations to be completed, adding: "I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends and all who knew and loved them." Emergency services were called to the scene at around 9.30pm last Wednesday, June 11. North Wales Police said one of the women had already been pulled from the water, while the second woman remained in the pools. A force spokesman said emergency crews pulled the second woman from the water, however both women were tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The multi-agency response to the incident also involved Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, the Wales Air Ambulance and the Coastguard. Police said investigations were continuing. The force is appealing for anyone who was walking in the Watkin Path area between 6pm and 9pm to contact officers. The Watkin Pools, a series of waterfalls popularised on social media, are on Hafod y Llan land owned by National Trust Cymru. The series of cascades and plunge pools on Afon Cwm Llan are featured on social media as a scenic spot for wild swimming. On Tuesday, the University of Chester Vice-chancellor Prof Eunice Simmons said the sisters had been studying international business and the uni was "in mourning for the tragic loss". She added: "They touched the lives of many here at Chester - their friends, the cohort on their course and the staff who taught them - and they will be deeply missed."
