Tyrone Mings addresses his future as Aston Villa face contract decision
@Source: birminghammail.co.uk
Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has reiterated his love for the club as he bids to earn himself a new contract and extend his stay beyond the duration of his existing deal. Centre half Mings made his comeback after more than a year on the sidelines with a serious knee injury when he returned at the end of 2024 to offer himself as another option to Unai Emery , along with Pau Torres, Ezri Konsa and, now, Axel Disasi. The England international, who maintains ambition of a recall under new boss Thomas Tuchel, has been with the club since January 2019 when he helped to inspire Villa's promotion via the Championship play-offs back to the Premier League. He signed for big money on a permanent basis the following summer and, either side of that unfortunate injury suffered in the summer of 2023, Mings has continued to be a crucial figure in the Villa squad. The centre half's current deal does, though, expire in the summer of 2026 and, although he'll be going nowhere this summer, Mings will enter in the final year of his contract with an inevitable uncertainty about what the long-term future holds. He has made it clear he'd love to stay. “You always have to go where you’re wanted and I’ve never been made to feel anything other than wanted at this football club,” Mings told the Telegraph . “I love the club. It’s pretty much everything you would want in a football club. So, hopefully.” As for the remainder of this campaign, Mings couldn't be much clearer in what the collective ambition is - to lift a trophy while the club under Emery enjoys this extensive period of strong form which has lifted them into Europe and has kept them there. “I think everybody’s aligned on that,” he said. “It has to be a trophy. While we’re in such an amazing period and such a trajectory, we as players want to leave a legacy here far beyond qualifying for the Champions League again. “The most important people we’re doing it for are the fans because there’s a large proportion of our fanbase that’s never seen us win a trophy. Selfishly, players also get the opportunity to become club legends and create a legacy, and to do things not many other players have done before. “Well, we’re in the quarter-finals [of the Champions League], so it’s not unreasonable to think about winning it. We’re not going to Paris to enjoy a day out. “The teams that are left in the competition are fantastic teams and we’ve proved we are worthy to be there. It’s not arrogant to think about winning it, but we realise we have a lot of work to do and the standard of opposition you have to beat to win it is maybe higher than the FA Cup .” Everyday, the BirminghamLive football desk strive to deliver all manner of news, features and transfer-related stories as a part of our overall package of Aston Villa content.
