The Delegación Territorial de Salud y Consumo in Granada has recommended that beachgoers avoid Playa de El Pozuelo (Albuñol) because of the precesence of sewage.
Controls have revealed the presence of Enterococcus faecalis which can be found in the human digestive system and also found in seawater, often indicating fecal contamination.
Faced with this Albuñol Town Hall has activated all its control and verification protocols to establish where the contamination has come from.
In collaboration with the water utility company Aguas y Servicios, there have been “exhaustive inspection” of the sewage network and the correct functioning of the municipal, sewage-treatment plant. The Town Hall, however, says that these inspections have not turned up any deficiencies in the system.
Amongst the possible causes behind this bacteria presence is a discharge through an overflow from a neighbouring municipality without its own sewage-treatment plant, or, it has come from an accidental discharge from a passing ship.
Editorial comment: the summer has begun and along with it overloaded sewage-treatment plants owing to the huge increase in coastal populations.
