In his controversial New York Times Best-Seller, Coates writes about his pilgrimages to the capital of the Confederacy, Columbia, S.C., and to Dakar, Senegal and the West Bank prior to its recent conflict with Israel.
The latter is the topic of “The Message’s” longest essay. The book seeks to dispel myths and illuminate realities that the author believes the mainstream media is missing.
The discussion is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Feel free to invite a friend.

YMCA hiring summer camp counselors: The YMCA of Greater Cleveland is now hiring passionate and dedicated individuals to join its team of summer camp counselors.
With summer just around the corner, the Y is offering an opportunity for high school graduates ages 18 and older, to gain valuable experience while making a positive impact on the lives of children across the region.
The YMCA of Greater Cleveland is offering camp counselor positions at $14 per hour.
YMCA summer camp counselors play a crucial role in creating a fun, safe and enriching environment for children. In addition to overseeing daily camp activities, counselors will develop essential leadership and communication skills, including how to provide clear instructions, offer encouragement, mediate conflicts, and foster teamwork among campers.
These skills not only benefit campers but also equip counselors with a solid foundation for success in future professional roles, whether in school, work or personal relationships.
Interested candidates can apply for summer camp counselor positions at the YMCA of Greater Cleveland and get more information by visiting clevelandymca.org/careers.
New Connecting for Kids website: Those who have a child with mental health issues, disabilities, developmental delays, academic struggles, behavior problems or other concerns, know that finding summer programs can be challenging.
With that in mind, Connecting for Kids has introduced a new website to help local families easily find inclusive summer programming for those 0-12 years.
The site, inclusivesummer.com, includes adapted summer camps, sports, and arts and recreational opportunities, as well as programs addressing academics, speech-language, motor, social and executive function skills, among others.
This website is searchable by child’s age, region or program length.
South Taylor construction update: University Heights Mayor Michael Dylan Brennan has passed along a construction update on the sanitary and storm sewer project in Cleveland Heights that will result in a road closure for approximately four weeks.
Since this project is on a major road, Brennan stated, and it is right on the border of University Heights and Cleveland Heights, motorists will want to plan accordingly.
South Taylor Road will be closed to northbound traffic north of Cedar Road at the University Heights city line, near the townhomes and just south of Washington Boulevard.
Southbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane. There will be access to businesses, including Lefty’s, Garber Upholstery, Heights Laundry, and Café Tandoor. Residents, he said, are encouraged to support Cedar-Taylor businesses throughout the duration of the project.
Detour signs will be posted, with the preferred alternate route being Lee Road to Mayfield Road.
Prep work for the repair project, including lane closure, will began April 2, with construction set to begin April 7.
Cleveland Heights officials report that the construction work should take about four weeks, or potentially as few as three weeks, weather permitting.
Residents and commuters should plan for the lane closures throughout the month of April, with landscape and sidewalk restoration through the month of May.
Heights Libraries asks for support: Heights Libraries has issued a release noting that the Ohio House introduced its version of the proposed state budget and that it would drastically reduce the amount of funding going to Ohio’s public libraries.
“The House’s proposal reduces state funding for Ohio’s public libraries by more than $100 million over the biennium as compared to Governor Mike DeWine’s proposal.” it states.
Find out more here.
“The unprecedented elimination of the Public Library Fund comes at a time when libraries across the state already saw a $27-million shortfall in state funding in 2024. Ohio’s libraries are currently funded at the same level they were in the year 2000 with no adjustment for inflation.
“Since then, our community has grown while the cost of library resources and services has increased, and we have evolved to serve our customers. State funding accounts for roughly 25-percent of Heights Libraries’ budget, and a decrease in that funding could lead to cuts in library hours, programming, services, and resources.”
Heights Libraries asks all who feel as they do to join a call to action.
“At this time, we are humbly asking all library patrons to contact their House members (Rep. Juanita Brent for Cleveland Heights and Rep. Eric Synenberg for University Heights and South Euclid), and Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman between now and Wednesday, April 9. Contacts should be made by email and/or phone calls.
Click on the names above for contact info. “The message to your representative should be simple and personalized,” the Libraries advises.
