A leading Tennessee university has been put on lockdown following reports of shots fired on campus, sparking concerns that an armed individual may be at large. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga community received an alert about a potential shooting incident at the University Centre or library. The warning stated: "Run. Hide. Fight. More info forthcoming." Students are now taking refuge in classrooms, and images reveal a significant police presence at the scene. A parent of one student at the university alleges his son can "hear the gunshots" and observe police "tracing the shooter", reports the Mirror. The Chattanooga Police Department spokesperson told News Channel 9 ABC, that officers were alerted to reports of shots fired this afternoon. A spokesperson said the reports came in at 1pm, local time, and that police have not located a victim. A UTC alert told people on campus to "remain on lockdown." The most-recent alert, also shared on X, said: "UTC ALERT: All individuals on the UTC campus should remain on lockdown. "Do not move unless directed by law enforcement. Campus facilities are currently being searched by police." The Chattanooga Police Department is investigating the incident, and trying to figure out whether shots were fired on campus. In a post shared to its Facebook page, a spokesperson for the force said: "ALERT: CPD is working with UTC Police Department to confirm Shots Fired reports that were called in. At this time, we have not located any victims. "Attention! UTC Campus and all City of Chattanooga - Government buildings are in current LOCK DOWN. Please avoid the UTC Campus until further notice!" Before it was confirmed as an active shooting, police escorting people away from the campus reportedly told passersby" "this is not a drill." People were seen leaving the campus following reports of a shooting in the afternoon. It has not yet been confirmed whether their have been any casualties during the incident, but it is understood that the campus is still on lockdown. Strong police and ambulance presence can be seen in photos, as the vehicles are parked up outside the campus. A video taken inside what is believed to be the UTC campus showed students had barricaded the door. A student said in the video: "We're trapped in a classroom and it's [been] going on, like 10 minutes."
