Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred held off World 200m champion Shericka Jackson in the women’s 300m at the Miramar Invitational, clocking a new national record of 36.05s.
In a showdown between two of the world's best sprint queens, Saint Lucia's star Julien Alfred triumphed over Jamaican track icon Shericka Jackson in the 300m event at the Miramar Invitational on Saturday, April 5.
Despite having a good start, the Olympic 100m champion worked hard for the win as Jackson matched her stride for stride until the last 10m, which she powered through to the finish line in a new Saint Lucian national record of 36.05s.
Jackson, who's still working back to her 2022 form that saw her win the 200m world title to become the fastest woman alive over the event, settled for second in 36.16s, while Ivorian rising sensation Jessika Gbai also ran a good race to finish third in 36.24s.
Alfred, who hasn't lost a sprint race against a top rival since winning the Diamond League 100m title last year after her Paris Olympics heroics, will be aiming to extend her winning streak as she returns to her signature events—the 100m and 200m— in her next preparatory meets ahead of the Tokyo World Championships in September.
