A councillor expressed her frustration after travellers took over a Birmingham park for the 'sixth or seventh time this year'. Convoys of caravans and vehicles have been repeatedly driving onto Swanshurst Park, on the Moseley and Billesley , border and setting up camps. On Sunday, July 20, the biggest group to date parked on fields, leaving the site out of action for locals as the school holidays began. READ MORE: Travellers arrive at Birmingham park in 'greater numbers than ever before' A ward meeting last month discussed the impact on residents, the cost to the city council and the prospect of increasing park security. Coun Izzy Knowles said: "Concern was raised by several councillors at the slow progress in identifying suitable interim sites for travellers to use . "It was also that the police seemed reluctant to use their powers to move on the more persistent groups that take part in the merry-go-round from one park to another. "This is the sixth or seventh time traveller groups have moved onto Swanshurst Park. "Each time causes anxiety and upset to local residents, denying them the use of their local green space and adds to bailiff and clear up costs for the council. "It is not sustainable and the council and police need to work together to come up with a solution sooner rather than later." A council spokesperson said: “ Birmingham City Council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it. "The council has useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community – which is in line with Government policy – and details of the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment carried out and updated in 2019 can be found on our website."
