Shane Pinto contributed a goal and two assists, and the United States never trailed Saturday, defeating host Sweden 6-2 in the World Championship semifinals in Stockholm.
The U.S. will play for the gold medal Sunday (2:20 p.m. ET, NHL Network) against the winner of today’s semifinal between Switzerland and Denmark. Team USA hasn’t won gold at the World Championship since 1960, when it won the Olympics, which at the time was considered the World Championship.
It was a disappointing showing for Sweden’s trio of Detroit Red Wings, who will compete for the bronze medal Sunday (9:20 a.m. ET, NHL Network) against the Switzerland-Denmark loser. Lucas Raymond, Simon Edvinsson and Erik Gustafsson did not figure in the scoring.
The U.S. jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Brady Skjei and Cutter Gauthier and added to the lead in the second on goals by Connor Garland and Mikey Eyssimont. The Swedes got back into the game in the third on goals by William Nylander and Elias Lindholm before Jackson Lacombe scored at 11:09 to put the U.S. ahead 5-2.
Jeremy Swayman made 27 saves for the win. Team USA is assured of its first medal since capturing bronze in 2021.
