The USA survived a Gold Cup scare against Costa Rica on Sunday night as they moved into the last four of the tournament via penalties.
Costa Rica scored first in the match before the hosts took the lead via Diego Luna and Max Arfsten, with Alfonso Martinez later knotting the game at 2-2 in the 71st minute.
The match went straight from regulation to penalties - with ex-coach Gregg Berhalter's son Sebastian missing a spot kick - before John Tolkin ultimately missed a chance to win the shootout as well.
However, Damion Downs later spared his teammates' blushes as he scored the winning penalty against Keylor Navas.
They Americans will face Guatemala in the semifinals.
