What is the 4-Nations Face-Off?
The NHL will take a two-week hiatus and there will be no All-Star game this year. Instead, this round-robin, best-on-best international men’s hockey tournament features NHL players from the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden.
A win in regulation counts as three points, a win in overtime or a shootout counts as two and a loss in overtime or a shootout earns one point. The two teams with the most points at each round will advance to face each other in the championship game.
The games will take place Feb. 12-20 with host cities Montreal, Canada and Boston, Massachusetts. USA and Canada were the co-favorites entering the tournament.
USA-Sweden preview
The United States defeated Canada, 3-1, in a highly emotional matchup at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Feb. 15. The encounter featured three fights in the first nine seconds.
After besting their rival, the Americans punched their ticket to the 4-Nations Face-Off championship game, which will take place at TD Garden on Feb. 20. Their final opponent will once again be Canada after it staved off a furious third period comeback from Finland.
With both spots determined, the action shifts to home soil for the Americans and a friendly-type matchup against Sweden.
Jake Guentzel has three goals and one assist in the tournament, while Zach Werenski and Jack Eichel have nabbed four and three assists, respectively.
Despite the pressure being off the United States, don’t expect them to let up in physicality. They tallied 17 hits against Canada in the first period alone. Team USA finished with 34 on the night.
It’s understandable to rest some top players for this matchup. It’s already been announced that opening night standout and Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk (two goals, one assist) will sit this one out with what is being described as a lower body injury.
Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger will get his first start for the United States. He enters with a 2.35 goals against average and a .911% save percentage.
Winnipeg Jets star Connor Hellebuyck started the first two games of the tournament for the United States, allowing just two goals on 47 shots. He led the tournament with a 1.000 goals against average and .957% save percentage.
The Americans have a chance to secure a perfect nine points before their rematch with Canada for the 4-Nations Face-Off championship.

Sweden was stunned by Finland in overtime, marking the second consecutive loss in overtime. The Swedes lost to both Canada and Finland in the tournament, taking their own destiny out of their hands.
Matters became much worse earlier this afternoon as Canada disposed of Finland, 5-3, eliminating Sweden from making the championship game regardless of its outcome against the United States.
This matchup has strictly turned into playing for country for the prideful Swedes.
Lucas Raymond has tallied three assists in the tournament, while Joel Eriksson Ek and Erik Karlsson have each nabbed one goal and one assist. Look for their impact to determine how competitive this one becomes in the finale.
Forward Leo Carlsson and defenseman Rasmus Andersson will make appearances in the lineup for the first time.
Linus Ullmark is expected to anchor the net for Sweden. He made 15 saves against Finland to relieve Filip Gustavsson, who exited the game due to illness. Sweden head coach Sam Hallam did not confirm who would get the start.
With a minus-2 goal differential, can Sweden dig deep to salvage back-to-back disappointing results in the tournament?
