Not even the long respite could slow down University of Santo Tomas as the Golden Tigresses beat the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 win to advance to the semis round of the UAAP Season 87 Volleyball tournament on Wednesday, April 23, at Mall of Asia Arena.
Drawing another inspired performances from Angge Poyos and Reg Jurado, the Golden Tigresses produced big plays each time UP made a comeback attempt to extend their winning run to four games for an overall mark of 9-4.
UST’s win gave La Salle (8-4) and Far Eastern University (8-5) free tickets to the semis round. The Fighting Maroons tumbled down to fifth place with a 6-7 mark, their semis bid vanished into thin air.
The win likewise put UST in good position in taking the second twice-to-beat bonus.
Reigning titlist National University has already clinched the top seeding plus the twice-to-beat bonus.
“In-apply lang namin ‘yong mga pinagaralan namin… sobrang laking tulong namin na recovery rest namin, sobrang gaan lang sa feeling and kaya naging ready kami today,” said Poyos.
“Gusto talaga naming makasok ng final four no’ng umpisa palang sinabi na ni coach (Kungfu Reyes) na isa ‘yon sa mga goal namin and thankfully nakuha namin,” UST skipper Detdet Pepito added.
Poyos took charge anew for UST with 19 points on 18 attacks and one ace to go with 9 excellent digs and five excellent receptions. Jurado contributed 13 points.
Cassie Carballo displayed her playmaking prowess by dishing off19 excellent sets, while Em Banagua shone defensively as she chipped in 12 points on four attacks and eight blocks. Mabeth Hilongo added eight points.
