Val Kilmer's official cased of death has been confirmed following his death aged 65. The iconic Batman and Top Gun actor passed away in Los Angeles on April 1 after a long health battle, his daughter said. TMZ reported that pneumonia was listed as the official cause of death according to documentation from the Los Angeles County Department of Health. The documents also revealed underlying causes such as acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, and squamous cell carcinoma of the base of the tongue, along with other factors including malnutrition and a tracheocutaneous fistula. She shared that her father had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 but had recovered after major surgery, including a tracheotomy which affected his speech. Kilmer rose to fame as fighter pilot Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in Top Gun with Tom Cruise and later donned the cape as Batman in Batman Forever, facing off against Jim Carrey's The Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones' Two Face. His illustrious career included portraying musician Jim Morrison in The Doors and roles in True Romance, Heat, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. In what would be his final bow in his distinguished career, Kilmer made a nostalgic return to the Top Gun saga that initially propelled him to international acclaim. After a gap of thirty-six years since his portrayal of the cool and collected "Iceman", Kilmer made a poignant appearance in the 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Post his cancer diagnosis over ten years ago, Kilmer maintained a low profile, seldom making public appearances. Kilmer's legacy continues through his children including his daughter Mercedes and son, Jack Kilmer, who is 29. Kilmer was wedded to Joanne Whalley, the mother of his children and a fellow actress, from 1988 to 1996. The pair had starred together in the popular film Willow. Throughout his illustrious career, Kilmer also had romantic involvements with Hollywood luminaries such as Cindy Crawford, Angelina Jolie, Carly Simon, and Cher.
