Vancouver Whitecaps make history, advance to CONCACAF Champions Cup final
@Source: straight.com
Is it too early to call 2025 the Vancouver Whitecaps most successful season of all time? We don’t want to jinx anything, but it’s looking like that. The Whitecaps are currently rolling. The MLS squad is in top spot in the entire league with 23 points in 10 games played. That’s five points more than the closest Western Conference squad (Portland). The Caps haven’t finished in the top five in the conference since 2017. Wednesday night brought more history to the season, as Vancouver isn’t just winning games in MLS. With a 3-1 victory over Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami, Vancouver advanced to the CONCACAF Champions Cup final. It was founded 63 years ago. In that time, no Canadian club has ever won the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Two (CF Montreal and Toronto FC) have played in the final. American forward Brian White (who has broken out as a star this year and has six goals in eight CONCACAF Champions League games) and midfielders Sebastian Berhalter and Ryan Gauld, among many others, have been instrumental in the team’s success. The turnaround for the club has been nothing short of remarkable. It was only November of last year that head coach Vanni Sartini was fired after the team won a third consecutive Canadian Championship but was eliminated in the first round of MLS playoffs. Dane Jesper Sørensen was hired shortly after that and has used the seeds planted by Sartini and some of the savvy player transactions by manager Axel Schuster to grow the team. All this, of course, comes at a time when the team is for sale. With American vultures reportedly circling around the club, there is a homegrown push to keep the team in town. If the Whitecaps can make history and win the CONCACAF Champions Cup (they will face one of two Mexican clubs—Cruz Azul or Tigres UANL), it will only serve to make the team a more attractive investment. It will also be a monumental moment for Vancouver soccer.
