Varun Chakravarthy, India's star performer in the recently concluded Champions Trophy, has expressed his wish to play Test cricket for his country. The 33-year-old mystery spinner played a key role in India's triumph with nine wickets in three matches. He also picked up a five-wicket haul against New Zealand in the tournament's group stage. However, he admitted that his unique bowling style could be a hurdle in playing the red-ball format of the game. Here's more. In a recent podcast interview podcast with Gobinath on his YouTube channel, Chakaravarthy opened up about his limitations in Test cricket. I do have an interest in Test cricket, but my bowling style doesn't suit Test cricket, he revealed. He said his bowling is like medium pace and he cannot bowl the required 20-30 overs continuously in this format. Since I bowl quick, the maximum I can bowl is 10-15 overs which is not suited for red ball, he added. Chakaravarthy started off as a wicketkeeper but switched to fast bowling in college. However, an injury forced him to become a spinner. Looking back, he said, No. That's why I am here. I would've been stuck there had I bowled pace. He admitted Tamil Nadu's spin-friendly wickets make it uncommon for fast bowlers to come out of the state, reiterating his switch was good for him. Notably, he has played just one first-class cricket match and has one FC wicket. Chakravarthy made his Champions Trophy debut against New Zealand during India's final group-stage match, managing a stunning 5/42. In the semifinal against Australia, he bagged a crucial wicket in the form of Travis Head, finishing with 2/49. In the final against New Zealand, he claimed 2/45, removing Will Young and Glenn Phillips. He ended the tournament with nine wickets in three matches at an average of 15.11, becoming the joint-second highest wicket-taker.
