FLINT - As the third annual Flint & Genesee Vehicle City Soccer Classic makes its return to Kettering University’s Atwood Stadium on May 17, three Flint-area high school girls soccer teams are set to compete. Grand Blanc High School (5-2-1) will kick things off at noon when it goes head-to-head with Mattawan High School (5-2-1) while a matchup between Rochester Hills Stoney Creek High School (2-5-2) and Flint Powers Catholic High School (2-3-2) will follow at 2 p.m. Davison High School (6-2) and Hartland High School (6-3) will compete in the final high school matchup at 4 p.m. with Flint City AFC’s season-opener against FC Pontiac capping off the night at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the gate or on GOFan.co. One ticket is valid for all four matches throughout the day. “The mission of our Vehicle City Sports Committee is to promote Flint and Genesee County as a venue for hosting youth and amateur sporting events. The success of our annual Gridiron Classic led us to soccer, which is increasing in popularity across the country. We are excited to have three high school soccer games scheduled, along with our pre-professional women’s team, Flint City AFC,” Judge Duncan Beagle, chair of the Vehicle City Sports Committee, said in a press release. All three Flint-area high schools have competed in the classic at least once since its founding, and Grand Blanc head coach Greg Kehler said it has become a staple for the area. “The rich history of Atwood Stadium in Flint goes back a long way from baseball to Thanksgiving Day football games. The addition of the Vehicle City Classic a few years back is a great opportunity to showcase the soccer talent in the Flint area and around the state. We’re excited to be a part of this tradition,” Kehler said.
