Veteran Kraig Chiles leads Sockers into Ron Newman Cup finals at Frontwave Arena

Kraig Chiles isn’t finished yet. One of the greatest players in San Diego Sockers history wants one more ring. The 40-year-old Chiles will get his chance Sunday, when the Sockers host the Chihuahua Savage for Game 1 of the Ron Newman Cup finals at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside. The best-of-three series will then move to Mexico for Game 2 and a possible winner-takes-the-title Game 3. The Sockers have been rolling during their first season in Oceanside, going 14-0 and winning last week’s playoff wins against the Empire Strykers and Baltimore Blast. The Savage are a perfect 12-0 at their home in Chihuahua, beating the Sockers twice. If anyone on the field knows the history of the rivalry — and San Diego’s place in the indoor soccer world — it’s Chiles, who is in his 16th season as a pro. Chiles has scored 505 career goals with the Sockers, the most in the storied franchise’s history and third all-time in the Major Arena Soccer League. He continues to perform at a high level: Chiles has scored 24 goals and logged eight assists in 21 games this season. He scored four game-winning goals during the regular season, tied for most in the MASL; his goal in last Sunday’s 11-3 semifinal win over Baltimore was the 43rd playoff score of his career. Chiles says he’s considered retirement or even becoming a player/coach, but the former San Diego State standout is having too much fun to change course. This year’s Sockers have gotten scoring from all over. Christian Gutierrez and Gabriel Costa scored three goals apiece last weekend. Goalie Boris Pardo allowed just five goals in the semifinal series. Next up comes the Savage, who have eliminated the Sockers from the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. “We feel confident in our team,” Chiles said. “I know it’s not gonna be easy. Chihuahua is good. We’re gonna go down and play and give them hell.” A Ron Newman Cup victory would give the Sockers 17 indoor titles. Vince Lombardi would envy that. Craig Elsten, who is the play-by-play voice of the Sockers and a lifelong San Diego sports journalist, understands the context. “If San Diego wins, it cements Sockers stature as the best indoor champions of all time,” Elsten said. “That’s Lakers and Celtics level. That’s what’s at stake for San Diego.” Chiles won a championship in his first four seasons with the Sockers, and he was on the club when San Diego won a COVID-season title in 2021 as well as another championship a year later. For every title, there have been other oh-so-close calls. “In 15 years, we’ve made it to the championship game six times and we have managed to win all six and we’ve lost in the semis seven, eight, nine, 10 times,” Chiles said. “So it’s about getting over that hump, you know?” The Sockers have had a homefield advantage dating to their decades at the old San Diego Sports Arena. The move to Frontwave Arena, the sparkling new facility in Oceanside, has only helped, coach Phil Salvagio said. “It’s our dream come true. My team. You can’t make that up,” Salvagio said. “Our depth is our strength. We have talent and depth. This team can do it. I know we can.” That starts with Sunday night’s match. “We feel good about our place,” Chiles said. “This team has match-winners all over the place, man. Historically, we relied on a couple players to score goals, myself included. But this team has so many options. We can score in so many ways. It can be collective. So many guys can show up and win a game. I love this group.” Ron Newman Cup finals, Game 1: Savage at Sockers When: 5:05 p.m. Sunday Where: Frontwave Arena, Oceanside
