The video a huge section of Indian cricket fans wait for on July 7 every year is out and rapidly going viral on social media: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and India legend MS Dhoni celebrating his 44th birthday. The former wicketkeeper-batter was seen cutting a cake with his friends in Ranchi, where he resides. It can’t be ascertained where exactly the video is from but fans on X speculated it could be from the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) premises in the capital city. Considered the greatest to ever don the gloves and the armband for the country, he scored 17,266 international runs for the country between 2004 and 2019. He hung up his boots in August 2020. Since then, he has continued to feature for CSK in the IPL. In 2025, he even captained the team for a few games in Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury-enforced absence. Will MS Dhoni play in IPL 2026? CSK’s 2025 season didn’t go too well, as they finished 10th in the points table with only four wins in 14 matches. Gaikwad is set to take back the leadership duties from next season and Dhoni, despite many expectations, didn’t announce his retirement at the end of the season. “It depends,” Dhoni said in the post-match presentation ceremony after CSK’s last match. “I would say the same thing, I have four to five months to decide. There’s no hurry to decide. It’s 15 per cent more effort to keep the body away from pain. This is top-level cricket; you have to be at your best. It’s not always performance that you can count on. If cricketers start retiring because of performance, then a few of them would retire at 22. What’s important is to see if you can contribute and if the team needs you. It’s also about the hunger to perform. I have enough time, going back to Ranchi. Haven’t been home in a long time, want to enjoy some bike rides. I’m not saying I’m done, I’m not saying I’m coming back at the same time. I have the luxury of timing, and when you have the luxury, why not?” CSK were allowed to retain Dhoni for a relatively low fee of Rs. 4 crore before the IPL 2025 auction, thanks to a change in the BCCI’s rules that allowed him to be considered as an ‘uncapped’ player because he had taken retirement more than five years previously.
