Incessant rain since Friday night battered Mumbai, flooding roads, disrupting traffic, and killing two people, officials said on Saturday.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Mumbai and Raigad, forecasting extremely heavy rain at isolated spots. In Vikhroli West’s Varsha Nagar, heavy rain triggered a landslide that killed two people and injured two others, the BMC said.
Rescue work is underway. Waterlogging was reported across the city, including Sion, Kurla, Chembur, and Andheri, with knee-deep water in parts of Sion. Vehicles were stranded on the Western Express Highway, and the Andheri subway was shut.
Vikhroli recorded 248.5 mm rain in 21 hours. The IMD warned of continued downpours. Flights were delayed at Mumbai airport, with airlines advising passengers to check schedules.
