Videos: Football Teams Set For Semi-Finals
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Bermuda men’s under-23 and women’s national football teams will step up their title bids at the International Island Games in Orkney tomorrow [July 17] when they compete in the semi-finals.
The men’s team face Jersey, the defending champions, at 1pm; meanwhile, the women’s side, who won gold in Guernsey two years ago, take on Gozo at 8am.
Coach John Barry Nusum, whose men’s side finished top of their group with four points from two games, believes they are set for their toughest test against Jersey.

“Jersey are always one of the top teams at the Island Games,” Nusum told Bernews.
“We want to focus on our performance and not so much on the opposition.
“We want to make sure we’re doing the right things, the correct passes, the right decisions – that’s our main focus.
“If we do those things well, we at least give ourselves a shout to get a victory and reach the final.”
Nusum also shared an update on defender Caleb McDowell, who suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle after a reckless tackle by a Ynys Mon player in a 2-2 draw yesterday.
“It was an excessive challenge, and the refereeing didn’t really help – we didn’t even get a foul for it,” he added.
“Caleb was at the hospital last night, and we’re making sure he’s taken care of.
“His spirits are good, and the boys are rallying around him. He has team-mates and family with him.”
Meanwhile, the women’s team, coached by Naquita Robinson, will look for their fourth successive win when they meet Gozo.
Robinson’s side also finished top of their group.

Jahni Simmons, who scored twice in a 2-0 win over the Shetland Islands yesterday, said her team-mates were determined to reach the final and retain their title.
“We just have to keep going and keep pushing to the next game,” she said.
“We feel very confident, but it’s not going to come easy, and we have to keep pushing to the end.”
