Vikings are lukewarm about Aaron Rodgers, but Giants could still miss out on him
@Source: nj.com
Aaron Rodgers reportedly wants to play for the Vikings — but if they really wanted him, they surely would’ve offered him a contract by now.
That hasn’t happened, as they remain fully committed (for now) to J.J. McCarthy, last year’s 10th overall draft pick.
And overall, it sounds like the Vikings are lukewarm on ever signing Rodgers, based on what ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Tuesday.
So that’s good news for the Giants, right? After all, they really want Rodgers.
Well, also on Tuesday, an item emerged — via NFL insider Josina Anderson — that the Steelers believe they’re “getting closer” to beating out the Giants for Rodgers' services.
The Giants and Steelers have both offered Rodgers a contract. But it’s not just that he prefers the Vikings. It’s also this: He reportedly might decide to retire instead of signing with the Giants or Steelers, if Minnesota doesn’t want him.
It’s beyond obvious that both the Vikings and Steelers are better landing spots for Rodgers than the still-rebuilding (to put it politely) Giants. Bottom line: Rodgers would be foolish if he picked the Giants, even if he doesn’t get an offer from the Vikings, since he has one from Pittsburgh.
Still, Rodgers is such an unpredictable (to put it politely) figure that there’s no telling what he might do. Does it mean a ton that the Steelers believe they’re “getting closer” to landing Rodgers? Not really — because Rodgers still needs to decide that he actually wants to play for them. And first, he needs to get a firm “no thanks” from the Vikings.
In the meantime, everyone waits on Rodgers — and the Vikings (though it seems pretty clear they’re not going to hotly pursue him).
The Giants have now hosted three fallback free agent options on visits — Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco and Jameis Winston. Wilson — who is the best of those three lackluster options — also has interest from the Browns.
Oh, and Joe Schoen — the Giants' hot-seat fourth-year general manager — has been so thorough (or maybe desperate?) with his quarterback plan this offseason that he was going to have a Zoom chat with Mason Rudolph. But that never happened, as Rudolph rejoined the Steelers.
Of course, Rudolph stinks, so he’s a much worse option than Wilson, Flacco or Winston. Pittsburgh brought him back as a warm body. Still, he preferred heading there instead of even speaking with Schoen.
Is the Rudolph stuff really a huge deal? No. But it does underscore how much Schoen is scrambling to figure out something — anything — at the NFL’s most important position, with his job on the line.
That’s largely because the Giants, at No. 3 in this year’s draft, could very well miss out on Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders — because they beat the Colts in Week 17 last year (an absolutely devastating win).
But again, as we’ve mentioned, this idea that Schoen is some sort of victim here, well, it’s completely absurd. He has only himself — and his string of terrible or questionable decisions — to blame for this mess.
