Viktor Gyokeres could wear legendary Arsenal shirt number as massive transfer nearly done

Arsenal are on the brink of securing a deal for Sporting CP goal machine Viktor Gyokeres . Mikel Arteta is set to bolster his frontline as the Gunners prepare to welcome one of Europe's most formidable strikers, with the former Coventry City forward poised to ink a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium. The Premier League title hopefuls are finally set to inject some much-needed firepower into their squad, after suffering setbacks in their last three seasons. A lack of a true no.9 put paid to their ambitions of toppling Manchester City two years in a row before last season, when Liverpool won the league at a canter, after Arsenal suffered injuries to to strikers including Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. But it's reported the North London giants have agreed to pay £54.8m upfront plus £8.6m in add-ons for Gyokeres, 27. Now the Gunners are ironing out the final kinks to seal the deal for their top attacking target, who has scored a whopping 68 goals in 68 league games for Sporting. For the Arsenal faithful, it's time to start envisioning what their attack might look like when they kick off the Premier League season against Manchester United . Speculation is rife about which shirt number the new recruit will don upon joining the club, reports Football London . This raises the question of his squad number, and with Gabriel Jesus currently sporting the number nine - the same he wore at Sporting CP - it seems likely their new striker will have to opt for a different jersey. The agreement might see Gyokeres donning a non-traditional striker's number. He could emulate Thierry Henry, who famously sported the number 14 during his trophy-studded tenure at Highbury - a number that is currently up for grabs. Throughout Gyokeres' career, he has sported various shirt numbers, including 12 and 17 at Coventry and 14 at Swansea City. Internationally, he has mostly worn the number 17, with spells sporting 16 and 18 as well as the classic attacking 11 and 10. Former Arsenal target Alexander Isak currently holds the number nine for Sweden after becoming a crucial forward for Gyokeres' international side. In North London, there are several squad numbers up for grabs that Gyokeres could claim. The number 10 has been vacant since Emile Smith Rowe made his move to Fulham; the number 14 is also yet to be claimed following Eddie Nketiah's departure to Crystal Palace . The number 16 has recently been nabbed by Christian Norgaard after he traded Brentford for the Gunners, while 18 and 20 remain unassigned following the departures of Takehiro Tomiyasu and Jorginho.
