With Virat Kohli likely to make his return after an injury scare, the batting icon will be eyeing a historic feat as India take on England in the second ODI at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday.
The 36-year-old batting icon is now 94 runs away from reaching 14,000 runs in ODI cricket. Should get this score on Sunday, he will become the third batter in ODI cricket history to do the feat following the likes of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.
Kohli has been struggling for consistency. His best performance of late was the century against Australia during the Perth Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Following the T20 World Cup 2024 however, he has not been at his best and a big knock on his return to the side could be a big boost in confidence as India look to finalise their preparations for the Champions Trophy 2025.
India comes into the second ODI looking to win and seal the series early on. After winning the previous game, India can put the series to bed and hope that they can give room to give the remaining members of the squad some game time in the final match.
Kohli will also look to surpass Sachin Tendulkar for another record as well. The latter holds the feat of having scored the most runs by an Indian batter against England across all formats. Kohli who is at 3979 runs needs 12 runs to surpass Tendulkar’s record of 3990 runs.
Should Kohli go on and reach triple-figures in Cuttack, he will also equal Sachin’s record for the most hundreds against England as well. Sachin holds the top spot with nine tons to his name while Kohli is behind by one with eight centuries. In addition, Kohli going past the 50-run mark would see him also go past Tendulkar for the most half-centuries against the English opponents across all three formats as well.
It should be noted that Kohli has had the chance to play way more T20I cricket in his career while Tendulkar had only played a singular game in the T20 international format. Nonetheless, Kohli getting a significant score would be a massive positive for the team in the lead-up to a major ICC event.
