@Source: news18.com
Ace India batter Virat Kohli is all set to join the Sydney Sixers, a post claiming the same from the official ID of the Big Bash League franchise went viral in the wee hours of Tuesday, raising eyebrows for a lot of fans across the world before they realised the catch of the post. After the X post went viral, the Big Bash League franchise clarified that it was an April Fools’ prank made on Tuesday. The Sixers are three-time Big Bash League champions, with their latest title coming right after the COVID-19 break in 2021. “King Kohli 🤩 Virat Kohli is officially a Sixer for the next TWO seasons,” the franchise posted on Tuesday. The Sixers have boasted of some quality overseas players over the years, with Dwayne Bravo, Nathan McCullum, Chris Tremlett and Johan Botha having played for them. But their dream of having Kohli in the lineup will have to wait till the star India batter retires from international cricket. BCCI restricts Indian cricketers from taking part in foreign T20 leagues to protect IPL’s prominence, ensure player fitness and maintain control over their schedules, as well as to safeguard the interests of domestic cricket. BCCI sees the Indian Premier League as a huge asset and permitting cricketers to take part in other leagues can dilute its brand value and popularity, they believe. The rule is different for women because of the lack of a robust domestic T20 league comparable to the Indian Premier League for men and to increase exposure and chances for women’s cricket. It needs to be seen if the growing popularity of the Women’s Premier League eventually leads to a crackdown on the female players as well. Meanwhile, Kohli will be seen in action when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on the Gujarat Titans on Wednesday at home.
