'Virat Kohli Upgraded His Software': RCB Batting Star Hailed For 'Radical Change'

Aakash Chopra is impressed by how Virat Kohli has improved his game against legspinners over the last few years. The ace Indian batter, who recently announced his retirement from Test cricket, continues to shine in white-ball formats. He has been in sublime form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), with Royal Challengers Bengaluru securing a top-two finish to qualify for the playoffs.
Kohli has struck 602 runs in 13 innings this season, including as many as eight fifties.
After RCB beat the Lucknow Super Giants in their last league fixture, Chopra highlighted a “radical change” in Kohli’s batting style, which, according to him, has made him more comfortable against spin bowling.
“Whether it’s a smartphone or a smart batter, you need to update or upgrade the software regularly, and that’s what Kohli has done. That’s why he is Virat,” Chopra said on Star Sports.
Chopra further shed light on Kohli’s strike rate against legspinners in the last five IPL seasons.
From 2020 to 2023, he managed to score at a rate of below 130, but since the 2024 edition, his numbers have improved a lot. This year, Kohli has batted at a strike rate of 146 against leg-spinners while in the last season, it was 150.
“In the last two seasons, you can see the differences– 150 and 146. So obviously, there’s a radical change in the way he has batted,” Chopra explained.
The former Indian opener also highlighted Kohli’s boundary count against good-length deliveries bowled by legspinners on which he has maintained a strike-rate of 139.
“How has he been able to do that? He can play the slog sweeps. He has been doing that well. He is clearing his front foot and taking on leg-spinners even if the balls are finishing within the stumps. So obviously, he is upgraded,” Chopra said.
RCB, who have won nine of their 14 league games, are set to face table-toppers Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025. The match will be played in New Chandigarh on May 29.
The winner will qualify for the final.
