Every online communication in the era of social media is public property. For public personalities and celebrities, a single response or interaction can make or ruin their career or turn them into the talk of the town. This was recently witnessed by actress Avneet Kaur, whose social media followers went into a frenzy after cricket legend Virat Kohli just ‘liked’ her post. A harmless Instagram click became a viral phenomenon that sparked discussions, memes, and wild theories online.
On May 1, astute fans noted that a picture of Avneet uploaded by one of his fan pages had been approved by Kohli. It came right after Kohli posted a heartfelt birthday greeting for his wife, actress Anushka Sharma. The sudden social media exchange sparked conversation right away, especially because Kohli doesn’t even follow Avneet on Instagram.
In response to the rife rumours, Kohli clarified on May 3 in his Instagram story that the ‘like’ might have been caused by an error in removing his feed. He informed social media fans that there was no intention and advised them not to draw hasty judgments.
The accident changed Avneet’s life. Her Instagram following grew by about two million followers in a few days, from 30 million to 31.8 million. Avneet’s prominence reportedly skyrocketed, putting her in the spotlight for over 48 hours. In addition, her social media post value rose from Rs 2 lakh to approximately Rs 2.6 lakh, a 30 per cent increase.
However, the repercussions didn’t stop there. As rumoured, the young actress was flooded with opportunities as a result of her viral fame. Avneet is said to have signed 12 new endorsement deals in a variety of sectors, such as fintech, fashion, and cosmetics. According to jokes on social media, Kohli’s unintentional like made her wealthier than some startups during the same quarter.
It’s surprising to know that timing isn’t the only factor in this. Avneet, whose name is already well-known from her cinematic and television work, is also slated to appear in the international film Love in Vietnam and is rumoured to be part of the upcoming Mission: Impossible movie. Her already rising profile has further grown as a result of this occurrence, underscoring the erratic and potent nature of social media.
The story of Avneet Kaur serves as a reminder that one digital activity, whether voluntary or not, has the power to provide unanticipated opportunities in a world where trends and success are controlled by online algorithms and split-second behaviour.
