Wales international has option to quit rugby union amid 'interest' from his past

Wales international Regan Grace admits a return to rugby league is "an option" for him this summer after an injury-hit start to his career in union, but says his preference is still to crack the 15-a-side code.
The 28-year-old wing joined Cardiff at the start of the year, coming in as injury cover on a short-term deal from Bath, where he played just four times following his move from Racing 92. The former St Helens star joined the Top 14 side in the summer of 2022 as he converted from league to union, but a ruptured Achilles ahead of the move saw him spend his time in France on the sidelines.
His performances in friendlies for Bath earnt him a call-up to the Wales squad for last summer's tour of Australia, but he missed out on both Tests against the Wallabies, instead making his debut in the uncapped fixture against the Queensland Reds. A hamstring injury in that game then required surgery, meaning he missed the start of this season before moving to Arms Park in January.
Grace has since made four appearances for Matt Sherratt' side, but last weekend's narrow 20-19 defeat to Benetton was his first full 80 minutes in a competitive game for nearly three years, and his first since switching codes.
“The one positive I can take personally is that’s my first 80 minutes for a long time,” he told The Guardian after the loss in Treviso. “My last was for Saints, so that’s something I’ve got in the bag. The first 10 minutes was a bit of a blowout as I’ve not played a lot of rugby in recent times but, once that was out the way, I was OK.
"You can push yourself as hard as you like in training but it’s not the same as a game, when the ball is constantly moving and there’s a lot going on. Now I know I can do a full 80 minutes and am getting back to nearly normal. I just need that ball in my hand.”
As he targets getting more consistent minutes under his belt, the Port Talbot-born flyer is keen to show Cardiff and Wales just what he can do between now and the season's end, although he is still adjusting to the nuances of the game.
"Cardiff needed a winger and it was a chance to play on home soil as I’d never played in Wales really," he said of his move. “I was excited. I always thought: if I ever go back to Welsh union, I’d want to go to Cardiff. The plan now is to play as much as I can until the end of the season.
“People ask me which I prefer, league or union. I say I’ve not done enough union to make a decision. I need the full range of different types of games, positions, involvements. I need to learn Cardiff’s systems too, which is hard as even in the Premiership teams play differently to the URC.”
However, with his short-term contract with Cardiff up in the summer, Grace - who travels to training from Bath every day - faces an uncertain future. A return to league, he admits, is a possibility with teams interested in bringing him back to the code, but he still feels like he has a point to prove in union after a series of false starts. He is still living in Bath until June when his rental home and playing contracts both expire. After that, a return to his previous sport is an option, even if he is still keen to prove himself in his new code.
“My agent is working behind the scenes, but I just want to show that I’m fit and firing," he said. "There’s always interest from league and it’s an option but at the moment I still feel like I haven’t cracked union and I want to do that.
"I wish it was still like when you could swap codes at the end of each season - I’d rather play all year than have an off season.”
