Wales international returns from England to sign for Welsh team

Wales international Dillon Lewis will return from England next season to play for the Dragons, it has been announced. The tighthead prop joined Harlequins from Cardiff in the summer of 2023 but has now been unveiled as one of the Newport-based team's raft of signings for the 205/26 campaign. He will hope the move will improve his international chances after missing out on this year's Six Nations squad. Lewis is currently recovering from a bicep injury. The 29-year-old has made nine appearances for Quins this season and will join club team-mate Wyn Jones at Rodney Parade. The move comes after the enforced retirement of fellow Wales international prop Leon Brown. Cardiff trio Thomas Young, Seb Davies and Tinus de Beer are also all set to move down the M4. The Dragons are looking to make major improvements next term after an appalling season that sees them 17 points adrift at the bottom of the URC table. Head Coach Filo Tiatia said: “We’re excited to sign Dillon. He’s a player with a wealth of international experience, with over 50 caps for Wales, and someone who has consistently performed at a high level. “He’s coming in from Harlequins, a well-established club, where he has competed at a high level in the English Premiership and top tier of European competition. “Dillon will bring confidence to our set piece so I’m looking forward to spending time with him and getting him in the building as we build our squad for next season and beyond.” Lewis, who has 57 Wales caps, said: “Firstly, I’d like to thank Harlequins for what has been an incredible experience. I feel extremely fortunate to have worn the quarters and represented this great club. “From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with open arms by the players, staff, and supporters – it instantly felt like a home away from home. Harlequins is a fantastic club where I’ve made lifelong friends and unforgettable memories. “I wish I could have finished this season stronger, but unfortunately, injury hasn’t allowed it. I’m working hard to get back fit before I leave, but regardless of what happens, I will give my all to the club for the remainder of the season.” “The opportunity to return home to Wales was something that really excited me. We all understand the challenges ahead, but the plans that Filo is putting in place look very promising. I’m also excited to work alongside Hobbsy again – he played a big role in my development, guiding me from the academy into senior rugby, and was a great mentor to me. “I also want to acknowledge that this opportunity probably wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for Leon retiring. He’s a good friend of mine, and it’s unfortunate that his career was cut short due to injury. “This a talented squad, with some familiar faces and excited new recruits. I’m looking forward to playing alongside players I haven’t teamed up with in a long time, like Keddie, as well as reunited with Elliot and Waino. There’s a lot of exciting talent here, and I think people should be optimistic about the future of the Dragons. With new signings coming in, I can’t wait to get going with the boys in pre-season. “I’d like to thank Filo, the Chairman David Wright, and Rhys Blumberg for giving me this opportunity to come back to Wales and play for the Dragons. I still have aspirations to wear that Welsh jersey again, and that starts with putting in performances and getting results for this club."
