Exeter Chiefs back Dan John is set to become English-qualified after agreeing a new contract with the Gallagher Premiership side. The son of former Welsh scrum-half Paul John, the 23-year-old Llantwit Fardre RFC product has played for Wales at U18s, U19s and U20s level, but has never made the step up into senior international rugby. However, as he approaches five years with the Chiefs, he will also become eligible to be selected by England. Since joining the club's academy from the prestigious Millfield School ahead of the 2020/21 season, John - who has also spent time on dual registration with Cornish Pirates in the Championship - has played 19 times for the Chiefs in all competitions, with injuries restricting him to just two appearances so far this season. But after impressing director of rugby Rob Baxter, the utility back has been tipped for a bright future at Sandy Park having put pen to paper on a new contract. The agreement will ensure his new eligibility for England, with John set to reach the required five years of registration to the club in the coming months. "Dan really started to impress towards the tail end of last season," Baxter told BBC Sport. "When we've been looking to introduce him into the team and him having opportunities he's actually picked up a couple of niggling injuries over the course of the season. "He's still a guy we see fitting into our back three, he gives us some strength in depth there going forward. He's a young player who we feel is still improving, so all of those things are good indicators for us that it would be good to keep him around, "I think he becomes EQP (an English-qualified player) at some stage this season as well, which is obviously another benefit to us, so there's lots of reasons for us to keep working with him and for him to be an ambitious part of plans going forward." Baxter added: "He’s a guy we spotted playing for Wales at age-grade level when we were actually looking at [now Exeter teammates] Dafydd [Jenkins] and Christ [Tshiunza] playing together. "He’s a player who is still improving and we haven’t yet seen him at his prime, so we’re hoping we’ll see him develop all the more over the coming seasons.” After signing his new deal, John said: "It feels brilliant to be staying at the club. I’m really excited to enjoy another season with the boys, and it’s a pleasure to re-sign with such a great club. “I’ve spent a lot of years here now, so I’m delighted to stay. It’s nice to see that other boys are sticking around as well, especially around about my age as we’re looking to really build on this group to be able to push on in the next couple of seasons.”
