Wales star leaves WRU immediately as contract not renewed after brutal few years

Wales Women scrum-half Ffion Lewis has announced she is leaving the Welsh Rugby Union programme after being told her contract will not be renewed at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old - who is part of the Welsh squad for the ongoing Women's Six Nations - was one of 37 players to earn a full-time professional contract from the union last year, but has now suggested that her international career may be over.
However, Bristol Bears star Lewis, who revealed the news on social media on Wednesday, has insisted she will not be retiring as she is "nowhere near done" with rugby.
It comes after an incredibly difficult couple of years for the back, who was ruled out for 20 months with a long-term knee injury suffered during the 2023 Six Nations. Later that year, Lewis underwent surgery after being diagnosed with severe endometriosis, with her health struggles also coming after she was left without a club following Worcester Warriors' collapse.
Admitting it had been an "extremely uncertain time," she added that she "cannot continue to allow my mental health to significantly suffer any longer" and will be quitting the WRU programme with immediate effect.
"It's with a heavy heart that I'm sharing the news that I will be leaving the Welsh Rugby Union," wrote Lewis. "Unfortunately, I've recently been infomed that my contract will not be renewed in June. Therefore, with the squad's best interests in mind and the protection of my own mental health, a decision has been made that I will be leaving the programme with immediate effect.
"I've poured my heart and soul into this programme over the last 10 years. Sacrificed my career and financial stability and lived and breathed the four walls of the National Centre of Excellence. I've overcome situations I didn't think were possible and found strength in myself that I didn't know was there.
"I'm walking away with my head held high that I've done everything that has been asked of me, been nothing but passionate and committed, worked hard and stood by the girls through thick and thin. But most importantly, been true to myself."
She added: "The last two years have been one of the most challenging times of my life for multiple reasons. Only five months ago, I went through this same process which is why I went to the USA to return from my knee injury. It's been an extremely uncertain time, so I just cannot continue to allow my mental health to significantly suffer any longer.
"This ISN'T a statement of retirement, as I am nowhere near done with the game. However, this may be the chapter closing on my international career. I have been so proud to represent my country and I feel so fortunate that I've been able to experience so many incredible things by wearing the jersey. Playing for Wales has been what my heart has always dreamed of.
"Thank you for all your support throughout my career, expecially the last two years, I appreciate it more than you'll ever realise. Sometimes, you'll never know when it'll be the last time you wear the shirt. But I'm at peace knowing that I've given every ounce of me to try and make it possible."
Lewis was named in new head coach Sean Lynn's 37-player squad for this year's Six Nations but has not featured, with Meg Davies preferred as the experienced Keira Bevan's understudy. If she has worn the shirt for the final time, she will end her Wales career with 33 caps.
